Your Mac Hardware Setup

Recommended Posts

hey guys

I finally get my first mac and i gotta say it is outta this world :-| ... i was quite literally stunned upon my first hour of using it :D:D. There is nothing wrong with windows it is perfectly fine, but thats exactly what it is just ... well ... fine. but mac os x is soo much better, so much more thought through with every type of user and detail taken into consideration. The only problem I have with apple is that it does not design many products for people with tight budgets in mind (i suppose thats where "you get what you pay for comes in") especially the cinema displays and was wondering if anyone could give me any alternatives as to a display with the same elegance as the apple one but with a 17" - 19" at about ?100-?150 ... maybe ?180 that anyone could recomend even somewhere where they sell the old apple LCD monitors maybe.

Thanx

Got this baby for Christmas. 20", brand new. :D

Next time I'm out somewhere I'm going to cough up some cash for a new keyboard/mouse. The Mighty Mouse just..blows. I've got a temporary replacement up now, a tiny Compaq optical USB mouse.

I'm liking the keyboard though, nice and silent and no useless buttons.

hey guys i'm trying to make a decision on something ... i want to get a compter monitor or a tv for my study, but can't make up my mind on the really nice mac styled white samsung tv (Samsung LE23R71B - LCD TV - 23") or the apple 20/23" display. Ideally i would like to be able to watch tv and play on my nintendo wii in my study and the problem ive hit is wether that i can hook the cinema display to my nintendo wii. could someone give me some advice ??? :D:D the reason i like the samsung monitor is that it would match my macbook and i could do everything that i want on it but i don't know anyone else that has used it ?? OMG im in such a mess could someone just help me lmao:P I CANT decide !!

where did you hear it

i've hered it all over the internet just google it and i found that in april 2006 apple applied for a patent showing a display with lots comeras embedded inside the pixels ... i wonder why they have stopped selling the isight cameras maybe this answers it ????

Apple patents stuff all the time, most of it won't make it into real products anytime soon if at all.

It's much more plausible that they'll release a Cinema Display with an iSight imbedded above the screen like the iMac/MacBook (Pro).

i wonder why they have stopped selling the isight cameras maybe this answers it ????

They stopped selling iSight cameras in the EU and other countries because of new environmental laws. That together with the fact that most Macs come with a build-in iSight probably killed the sales of the stand-alone version.

not a good quality pic but here it is anyway my imac 20" C2D ....

PS : 10 points to whoever can find out what dvd im ripping, it's there on the desk :)

Don't know what movie, but I am curious to what DVD Ripping software you use?

tell me about the environmental laws that made apple stop selling isight. i dont know anything about it.

please. =)

The EU, among other countries, are banning (or at least trying to) mercury and intensive usage of lead from customer products. CRT monitors and the iSight apparently have one or more of these materials imbedded in their hardware. That's why Apple discontinued the eMac and iSight. Read it in a Dutch newspaper a while back.

Sorry for the late respons btw.

yeh u have a fair point ... but ... no 1 has answered my question ... is it wroth me getting a cinema display with POSSIBLE evedience to suggest a new one might come out soon ?

We presented you with the facts, now it's time to make up your own mind.

Several updates here!

1. Most notably, the Dell 700m has been sold off and replaced with a black MacBook! Got a 2.0GHz Core Duo refurb for $999, got a free upgrade to 1GB of RAM (going to 2GB soon), 80GB hard drive, etc. VERY nice machine, flawless, was a great deal?and now I am completely Mac (except for the server of course, that?s Linux).

2. Added gigabit ethernet. MUCH faster than the old 10/100. Also, I moved all the networking stuff (router, switch, etc), my USB hub, and all my charge/sync cables to the keyboard tray that I don?t use; you can see it under where the MacBook is placed on the desk. That cleaned up a lot of cable clutter on the desk.

3. Sold the Logitech S530 set and got an Apple Bluetooth keyboard and Logitech VX Revolution mouse for the iMac

    • Microsoft AI boss no longer believes that AI will replace human workers by David Uzondu Mustafa Suleyman, the head of Microsoft AI, recently took back his statements concerning white-collar jobs that he gave to the Financial Times in an interview made back in February, where he claimed that AI would replace office workers within 12 to 18 months. On Monday's episode of The Verge's Decoder, Suleyman recast the technology as more like a helpmate than a tool designed to take over your job. He explained that smaller office duties will "increasingly become digitized, automated" as people generate more digital materials. During the discussion, Suleyman emphasized a "very important distinction" between "tasks" and "jobs" to clarify his previous claims. He argued that his earlier comments only referred to individual actions that people perform at their desks. Suleyman used to work for DeepMind, the research lab he co-founded in 2010 alongside Demis Hassabis and Shane Legg, before he left in 2022 to establish Inflection AI and build an empathetic digital assistant. Microsoft hired him in March 2024 to lead its newly formed "Microsoft AI" division, placing him in charge of consumer products like Copilot, Bing, and Edge. His February comments also detailed plans for Microsoft to achieve self-sufficiency with a $140 billion infrastructure budget to train frontier models, predicting that creating a customized AI will soon feel like creating a podcast or a new blog: The 41-year-old is not the only AI executive who's softened his "AI will replace you" stance. OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, last month used X to push back against employment panic by arguing that his startup builds tools to assist humans rather than build replacements. He had previously garnered backlash by suggesting that many modern office roles that AI might replace did not qualify as "real work" in the first place, at least when you compare desk jobs to physical, historical labor like farming.

    • Meta will now use data from outside businesses to personalize AI responses by David Uzondu In an update that's rolling out globally (except in a handful of countries), Meta will use your data from outside businesses to personalize your AI responses and your primary feeds. Meta already utilizes your shopping activity to target ads, but the company now plans to expand this tracking to personalize other "parts of your experience" like feed algorithms and AI assistant chats. The company is replacing the two settings ("Your activity off Meta technologies" and "Activity from other businesses") that currently let you disconnect off-platform activity with a single, renamed setting called Activity from other businesses. If you don't want Meta to manipulate your feed and AI responses using your outside history, you can just turn the Activity from other businesses setting off in your account settings. This toggle resides within your Accounts Center, applying your choice to every connected profile. Turning this off will not stop companies from sending your data to Meta. The company will still collect your web interactions, but it only uses them to train products, while still accessing external accounts you connect. When The Verge spoke to Meta spokesperson Emil Vazquez, the representative said that this update will exclude several locations at launch, including the European region, the UK, Brazil, Thailand, South Africa, Turkey, South Korea, Ecuador, Nigeria, and Kenya. The new update comes at a time when the social media giant is recovering from a major PR disaster involving generative AI. Last week, there was a huge security issue on Instagram where attackers figured out a way to trick Meta AI into handing over account ownership (even if the victim had 2FA enabled). Some of the affected accounts include the dormant Obama White House profile, cosmetics brand Sephora, the Chief Master Sergeant of the Space Force, and security researcher Jane Manchun Wong. Internally, the company also had to scale back plans on its Model Capability Initiative (MCI), an employee-monitoring program designed to train corporate AI models by recording worker keystrokes and screen activity, after employees raised privacy concerns and complained about severe battery life drain.
