Hotmail slip improves members' memory

What a difference a few zeroes make.

Some new users of Microsoft's Hotmail on Wednesday got a pleasant surprise when they received 2 gigabytes of storage upon registering for the popular free e-mail service. That's a thousand times more than the 2 megabytes that new users should be getting.

Microsoft confirmed on Thursday that some free e-mailers were given the wrong amount of storage and that 2MB is the correct amount, claiming the matter was caused by an "error." The software giant that day was busy upgrading its paid users to 2GB, which costs $19.95 a year, and some of those perks slipped into free accounts.

"When rolling out 2GB of storage, it inadvertently went over to free users as well," a Microsoft representative said.

Unfortunately for those benefiting from the error, Microsoft plans to revert these free accounts back to 2MB. However, free Hotmail users will get their own storage boost later this summer or early fall when the company increases their memory limits to 250MB.

E-mail storage has become a hot topic over the past few months. It all began when Google announced its intention to launch its own free e-mail service, called Gmail, that would give every user 1GB of storage. The move sent shockwaves across the industry, causing its fiercest rivals to follow suit.

In June, Yahoo responded when it upgraded its own e-mail storage by boosting free accounts to 100MB and paid users to 2GB. A week later, Microsoft took it a step further with the announcement of its 250MB and 2GB plans.

Microsoft is not the first to stumble in revamping its e-mail service. In May, some Gmail users noticed their storage limits had skyrocketed to 1,000GB, or 1 million megabytes of memory. Google soon fixed the glitch and restored its 1GB limit.Source

pretty conviniant error, think about it. how many of you would have never installed the msn software and registerd for that account if they had never heard of this. we all played right into what they wanted, talking about the 2gigs at msn rather than the 1gig at gmail. seems like a big publicedy stunt by microsoft to me.

I think it's more likely they screwed up than thought that little gem up

lol , you can never trust microsoft even with the bugs they have , mah borther was all lone ranger on mah ass after he got the 2gig msn account as i have a 1gig gmail account but now im having the last laugh as he cant stuff more than 2mb in his so called 2gb account , guess its just a bug in display, in reality they are 2mb accounts only .

what do you mean alerts??

is your account 2gb or 2MB now?

my account is 2MB now. what i mean by alerts (in messenger go to tools, options...,then click on the phone tab then under mobile devices.) i set it where people on my contact list could send messages to my phone if i wasn't online. everytime i did that it made my 2GB accounts go to 2MB. hope i cleared that up

Word is it from Microsoft that the accounts will soon be dropped to 2MB! as soon as the upgrade has been completed.

      There is nothing wrong with this title. You have completely missed the plot when it comes to "clickbait." The issue was never that a title tries to entice you to click, that is how titles have worked for over 100 years. The issue is when the title subverts expectations, getting you to click expecting something that isn't there. The classic clickbait example is "Boyfriend caught cheating, what happens next will shock you," then what happened next is the girlfriend was upset...which is probably the least shocking outcome imaginable. If sounds like what you want is for the titles to be a collection of 10-word summaries that you can skim, get the just of the story, and only click if you want more details. That is not, never has been, and never will be what titles are. You can go all the way back to print newspapers during the great depression and see the same thing. The newspaper was locked in a vending machine, all you can see is the headline, you choose to put in 5¢ to buy the paper and read the rest if you want. Those headlines were written in a way to sell the paper, not just to provide a summery. Here are two actual headlines from that time, "Wall Street Lays an Egg," or "Stocks Hit Bottom?" Maybe you'd say something like "it was wrong then and it's still wrong now." Okay, fine opinion to have, but it isn't like Neowin is doing something unjurnalistic, they are just following the age-old standards for written media.
