Greetings Neowinians... I have not been around here for ages, how time flys...

I am looking for some way to rename all the Control Panel Items, less space = better...

I also want to remove the "Folder Options" and "Fonts" Menu from Control Panel...

It is not possible to rename the items from the .cpl files String Tables and Menus,

from there I can only change the "Capion bar and In program names not the Text in Control panel.

I have not found anything in the registrey... I will give it a try again tomorrow..

would appreciate any help...

Problem Solved... I was tired last night I guess : ]

---------------------------

Administrative Tools

Folder Options

Fonts

Network Connections

Printers and Faxes

Scanners and Cameras

Sheduled Tasks

Taskbar and Start Menu

----------------------------

Can be renamed / removed on the Register string below,

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\MUICache]

The rest of the control panel applets can be renamed by reshacking the .cpl file itself,

some can be renamed in shell32.dll,

Scanners and Cameras ---> sticpl.cpl from wiashext.dll

Folder Options --> SHELL32.dll

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

dougkinzinger >> the reason / purpose I wanted to do this was to get a minimalistic look so that it matches with my other minimalistic mods.

As soon as all the control panel applets where renamed and the control menu looked more minimal I was

starting to have a new problem that I did not had before this.

The "blank" spacing width between all the other StartMenu items has been increased by "0.5cm"..

This is very strange because I really dont see how this can relate to the control panel issue...

Nothing else was changed, applying the theme again or reload the font does not help,

would appreciate any help...

another easier way to remove the "FONTS" and "FOLDER OPTIONS" shortcuts fr the control panel.

STEP1: START> RUN: gpedit.msc

STEP2: User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Control Panel

STEP3: Select: Hide Specified Control Panel Applets

STEP4: Properties > Enabled > Show... > Add... > FONTS and FOLDER OPTIONS > OK > DONE

it is really unnecessary to have those shortcuts in the Control panel, "Folder Option" can still be selected in everyfolder "Tools > Folder Options" and fonts in the windir,

Here is my final results.. I'm pretty happy with it, the .cpl Files at the bottom and the other control panel folders at top for easy access. This is only useful for those that use the "Classic Start Menu" and "Expand" the control panel folder.

I'm still looking for a way to get the start menu width fixed.. it really breaks the Minimal concept..

Vacation > bad weather > 2 much free time > restless > spending time on unnecessary crappy computer makeovers  > wow what a summer..

That 0.5cm space is probably reserved for arrows (like those you can see next to Administrative Tools, Network Connections, etc.)

Yeah you're right, I've tried using/adding smaller arrows/common glyphs by editing the marlett.ttf but windows is still reserving that space. Even removing the glyph arrows wont help, the blank space is way to high even if you are using folders insted of icons, ~0.2cm would look much cleaner.

I'm looking for some way to find the Min/Max Width setting that windows is reserving. This has been a big issue even from the win9x days, can't fint anything about this in the shell32.dll / registry or Virtualplastic.net..

    • You are clueless. The updates are done in the background so the next time you open Edge the updates are applied automatically. There is no need to close all your tabs. Just keep browsing like you normally do. Clearly you don't use Edge and are just one of those haters that complain for the sake of complaining.
    • I don't get this David. Can you explain it please.
    • Microsoft is busy. Lots of changes to be released imminently for Windows server or soon. Also, lots happening for next version as well. Third party virus scanning software is being moved out of Kernel mode to avoid repeat of Crowdstrike incident. Windows Protected Mode and Windows Ready Print no longer require third party print drivers to be installed. New storage stack being developed. New NVME drivers now available for Windows Server 2025 to improve local NVME drive performance by 60+ percent. NVME-Of of fabric being worked on for next release to improve network access to NVME drives. ReFs (next file system) now has ability to boot and will become default file system in next release of Windows Server. ReFs improves on NTFS in several areas including resiliency and reliability and scalability. New update stack is being worked on to unify Windows updates, and updates for drivers and first party/3rd party application software. A stricter and more robust third-party driver certification program (ODI) is being worked on to improve performance, thermals, battery life, and reliability on modern Windows hardware by tightening how OEMs and IHVs (Intel, AMD, Qualcomm, NVIDIA, etc.) build and ship drivers. There is a tone more but too numerous to mention.
    • Now disable that stupid OneDrive backup request when Windows starts please. So unbelievably frustrating to only have “remind me later” instead of “no and never ask me again”
