Somehow I still prefer IE when I am using my XP based PC. On my iBook I use Ff exclusively. (I can't tolerate Safari...good interface but totally unreliable).

I feel when it comes to overall UI, Firefox needs to catch upto IE, sure I can use themes but then it still looks alien on either platform.

Quite the opposite, Microsoft has promoted the use of alternatives although they do stand behind Internet Explorer as any developer would. Seems most of the mud is from the hands of those supporting Mozilla foundation.

Sorry if this comes off harsh, but most of your argument seems more like bellyfeel than anything else.

Oh, come on. You call that promotion? Promotion is putting a huge ad on your front page saying "Use Firefox!" Not putting the piece of software in a software catalog of Windows stuff. That's like saying Apple promotes the use of Audion over iTunes just because they show it in the OS X Downloads section of their site.

Promotional tips to software are just that, no matter how large or small they may be. I was trying to demonstrate to ivand67 that while Microsoft may condone some alternatives they do not relinquish the fact that users have a choice (which in turn is actually a sales point for Windows itself) in the matter contrary to his claim.

ha, that is hardly an excuse to use it.

speed is a moot point when its insecure and does not follow standards.

I agree. Here is a good security test for IE. Surf a few porn sites and watch what happens to your computer. Your computer will be loaded with BHO's, spyware, adware and viruses. Grant it that porn might not be your cup of tea, but its a good test to see how secure that your browser is. The tactics that porn sites use are the same tactics that everyone uses to fill your computer up with crap, its just that porn sites will do it in a short amount of time and make testing IE's security fairly quick. And yes, Firefox also gets all of the above mentioned crap too, but only about 1/4th as much and the browser will never be hijacked.

I must confess that I sometimes use Firefox for surfing 'dangerous' websites (LOL) , because I don't want anything bad on my computer.

But I can't stand using Firefox for all my internet time, because it feels so heavy and slow compared to IE.

I have anti-spyware, anti-virus, hardware and software firewall, so I feel pretty secure, and I will never ever click 'yes' to those pop-ups and flash animations.

Firefox barely has any 'features' unless you clutter it by installing 10~15 extensions, comepared to some IE add-ons such as Maxthon or Avant, yet IE add-ons comsumes much less memory than Firefox.

And I can't stand the way Firefox rapidly gets slow down when you have more than 5 tabs, I usually have more than 15 tabs on my Maxthon, but I never experienced such lags.

If you feel Firefox is heavy, something is wrong. As far as extensions go, I downloaded Flash and Java and that's it. Every site that I visit works fine. I fix computers for a living, so I'm on the internet 15 hours a day (going to different manufacturer websites to order parts, see flash presentations etc) and even I don't need 10~15 extensions. You must do some serious surfing :p . Our central computer will have 15 to 20 tabs open at one time and we don't notice a slow down. I just opened up 12 tabs (on my home computer) and Firefox is running at 35,196K right now for me and there isn't any slow down. After minimizing and then maximizing the windows again, its down to and hovering around 24,345K.

If I click the browser icon, I want it to start up right away, not wait for 4~5 seconds to start it up.

And yes, I'm on broadband 3mbps and having more than 5 tabs seriously decrease the speed.

Also, it is true that Firefox needs more than 10 extensions to match functionality of lighter IE add-ons such as Maxthon or Avant.

I'm not the only one who thinks Firefox consumes too much memory.

What broadband are you using? I'm sitting at 100.0 Mbps right now. Firefox uses more memory, true, but not as much on my machine as others (don't know why that is). My Firefox starts and my homepage is loaded in 1.7 seconds (just used a stopwatch to check it). Just did a dsl speed check, http://performance.toast.net/ , it's for toast.net, but it works for any dsl connection and my Yahoo DSL connection is off the board. I have been using Firebird/Firefox since it's inception and have never needed that many extensions. If your machine is newer, it doesn't matter how much memory a program uses, it won't slow it down so much that you notice it.

Do this for a faster startup: Right click the Firefox icon that you use to start it. Click properties, shortcut and in the "target" window add /prefetch:1. Make sure that there is a space between "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" and /prefetch:1 (leave the quotes) so it looks like this, "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" /prefetch:1. That will help Firefox start up faster.

erm

errm, avant is a differend browser not a add on, it uses the ie engine, like firefox uses the ghecko engine, only firefox includes that engine, avant doesnt cause ie is allready on everyones machine

get it straight

Hmm... On my PC IE takes ~0.5s to launch. Firefox ~1.0s. Guess you have a pretty old PC? The prefetch option will work well on XP...

Perhaps you'd like Firefox to remain resident so that it loads faster? That's what the OS does for IE... Adobe decided they had to do that with Acrobat Reader 7 to alleviate slow performance in 6...

The reason why I called Avant or Maxthon 'IE add-on' is because IE core is running in Windows all the time, even when you're not browsing with it.

Which is part of reasons why they start up much faster than Firefox.

And thanks todbran, I'll try them later.

lol when will people realize the W3C standards are RECOMMENDATIONS, meaning no one HAS to follow them. Also no browser avalible today is 100% compliant to every version of the W3C's HTML related standards...

585410527

Quite correct, the "de facto standard" IS IE because 90% of users use it!! For those of you who do not understand what that means, here is the definition:

De facto standards

A de facto standard, for instance, is a technical or other standard that is so dominant that everybody seems to follow it like an authorized standard. The de jure standard may be different: one example is the metric unit of kilometre, which is the de jure standard for road distances in the United States, while the mile (=1609.344 m) is the de facto standard.

A de facto standard is sometimes not formalized and may simply rely on the fact that someone has come up with a good idea that is liked so much that it is copied. Typical creators of de facto standards are individual companies, corporations and consortia.

Another example of a de facto standard, is where a product that does not follow de jure rules gains market superiority. Microsoft's Internet Explorer does not support de jure W3C Web Standards, but because of its market dominance web pages are often designed with Internet Explorer's de-facto interpretation in mind.

Well now there you go.....

The point of this thread is, apparently, to "prove" that IE is faster than Firefox...

the problem being - that test is not a shear test of connection speed.

The test relies massively upon Javascript to obtain its results.

What does it prove? Simply that IE executes that particular javascript a bit faster than javascript. Not that "IE is faster than Firefox" (it is not).

Ok. You don't believe that.

How about this? http://www.howtocreate.co.uk/browserSpeed.html

This site shows IE as being faster than firefox.

  • 2 weeks later...

How come when I move a window over a firefox window, then move it around, it either trails or lags. But it doesn't do that in internet explorer. My firefox is untouched, and it's slow. Why? Why is it slow? I thought firefox is supposed to be the best browser ever, but it's not. Why not?

585531883

Well it can't be the best for everyone. Everyone guages "the best" and "better" on different things. I'm sure you're in the minority that marks a browser's performance and useability on moving a window around on top of it.

Plainly put, IE in Windows will work faster than anything because Explorer is the engine used for rendering the Windows Desktop. Of course, if you install Netscape and their little systray quickstart thingy, then its just as fast, but who uses netscape now? Is it even W3C compliant? ;)

    • WordArt was cool. We now have color fonts as a substitute although Word only supports COLRv0 and COLRv1 (Fraud OS 11 only). The OpenType SVG color font format needs to be supported by Office. Adobe's apps support it
    • i backup my files, incl keepass to my proton drive using Syncback which i paid for (thanks Warwagon!). they have a free version but i can't remember what it does and doesn't do anymore. anyways, it's really, really simple and easy to use. i also periodically keep backups of my keepass onsite especially when i've changed or added a password that is important to me. if you don't wanna spend time on the syncthing setup, get syncback. haha i even got my dad to use it for his backups to usb and he doesn't even need my help!!! (thank god!)
