ATI promises Doom 3 performance boost

Recommended Posts

ATI will profit loads more if they optimised their drivers for Doom III.

Are you saying in general, or that Doom III is a bigger selling than HL2 (will be)? I mean, in general, yes ATi would do better by improving their OGL support. But, as far as sales go, I have to believe that considering Counter-Strike is one of the most popular PC games ever ... ATi was wise in supporting HL2 over Doom III

It's a good thing that ATI update their OpenGL driver.

I don't if you know this program : http://www.shatters.net/celestia/ but it much more beautiful on nVidia system than ATI system. You should try after installing new texture, it's marvellous.

Marvelous software, I run it con my fedora machine and it rocks linux OpenGl

Well i just hope Ati get some support for OpenGL soon. I do think though that they should have had better support in that area. Even though less games are being made with it (though i think that will change with Doom#) i think it is still an area of concern. Hmmmm Ati making the right choice by going with HL2? Hmmmm tough call. I guess you can say that was good, as good of a choice for Nvidia to go with Doom. Nividia needed this push from Id to get back up on the market. They were lagging a bit in terms of sales and all that. I think it was a smart move by them. But i do think Doom might have a small edge over HL2. Im just thinking of the market. Older guys who remember when the first Doom came out and who want to relive that expierance again. Plus the fact that CS maybe popular, but i know of a ton, and i mean a ton of gamers who have left the game for bigger and better things. Plus the fact, the hacking in CS was terrible compared to most other games out there. But still, i think Nvidia made the right choice in this situation. Ati made a small slip up with support, so hopefully they will have a new set of drivers out to correct the problem.

ps

Just found this. I rest my case on the CS issue

ATi has always had great drivers, usually not buggy like many nvidia ones

Nope... they've been absolutely crap for ages and have picked up in the past year. I can remember installing new ATi drivers and hoping I wouldn't get a blue screen (nearly always blue screened; only being able to use the drivers that came with the card sucked!), but they are better now. Still, when I update I often lose 2D acceleration and it is a nightmare to get back.

Still, I hope they do something great with their OpenGL driver because I would like some reasonable performance with Doom 3. If not it looks like I'll be stuck with HL2 and CS:Source - they should run pretty well and look quite nice (not Doom 3 nice, but the gameplay of CS and Half-Life is brilliant).

Both can run Doom3 quite well already. The problem is that ATI's current OGL support in its last few Cat packs has been lacking. Many have found that their OGL games run better on circa 4.2 Cat OGL driver. This is most likely what they are addressing. ATI can't be touched right now in D3D games.

I dunno, I've had 3 ATi cards in the last 5 years, outside of some shady laptop support, I've always seen the drivers get better as time goes on. I would say they're certinaly comparable to Nvidia now.

Yeah, I'm a guy who played the first Doom, I'm looking forward to III, but I'm looking much more forward to HL2 and the source engine. While many people did leave CS, it's what .... 6 years old now, and still the most played online game? And I always liked the fact that I bought Halflife, got some great multiplayer (team deathmatch was so fun when it came out), and later got games like CS and DoD in the same package.

Not sure why everyone keeps on saying that ATI has suddenly decided to re-write their OpenGL drivers in light of DOOM 3's release. ATI stated last year (during the fall) that they were planning on performing a complete retooling of their OpenGL drivers, and that they had hoped the code re-write would be done in the fall of 2004 (which it is, almost). In other words, ATI has been working on improving their OpenGL performance for quite sometime; they just decided it would be better to release one super performance boost CATALYST driver, rather than implementing a series of smaller improvements over the course of several CATALYST releases. I am sure the HardOCP.com article on DOOM 3 prompted ATI to do a little overtime work to get the OpenGL-improved driver out sooner though...

Lets hope that now that ATI is finally working on there OpenGL drivers again, that they will update their linux drivers as well (because they really need new linux drivers, the current ones sucK).

Plus, it would be nice to play Doom 3 at a decent FPS on my ATI Radeon 9600XT.

You'll be able to even on the drivers we have now.

Linux drivers though, that would be nice, but I'm sure ATi knows where the priorities lie.

im in the same boat. although medium settings looks ok, who the hell wants medium when theres high? :p

and linux drivers, oh god yes. im actually considering using integrated nforce video instead of my 9600xt just cause of the linux drivers. i really wish they fix themselves with their open source obligations (linux and opengl)

well flame me if i am wrong but do the Omega drivers for ATI not offer better OpenGL performance

Here

I won't flame you but you are wrong. He worked with another group to get an openGL driver out that had better performance in counterstrike, and CS alone. That driver would be missing many other fixes and stuff for all the other games that have been fixed since that driver was released.

is there better performance through the omega drivers for doom 3?

is there better performance through the omega drivers for doom 3?

Well I don't have Doom3 so keep that in mind.

But I don't think so, and if it does it wouldn't be by that big of a Delta. Again the uber performance openGL driver that he has was made by NGO for counterstrike alone. It's an old driver and you have to specifically choose it when running Omega's installer. You will not want to use that on Doom3 because it's buggy as hell for other games.

Now omega's normal tweaked opngl driver shouldn't give better performance, generally most of what he does is add IQ tweaks and enable hidden tabs in stuff in the registry however there are several ways in which Omega's may be better.

For one his driver includes a softmod, so if your ATI card is one of the ones that can be softmodded well there's a small performance gain right there.

Second it includes an overclocking utility so you could improve performance alittle there as well.

But all that said I still think it's just be a frame or 2 nothing to get really excited about.

    • Did Labour lose big? They had losses there is no doubt. However let's look at the reality. The conservatives have 168 councils I believe. Labour have 113 and Reform...38. That's a lot of growth for Reform granted. But that is not a wipeout, Reform don't have the majoring in fact at 76 I believe the Liberal Democrats have nearly twice the councils Reform do. So I am thinking there is a lot more noise than signal going on here. Now then let's talk about the law. It's an age restriction. We do it for cigarettes, **** and alcohol. This idea that some kids will find there way around it so it's not worth even trying is really really sad. Hell we can't stop every murder. Should we stop trying there too? That is the logical conclusion.
    • A game not selling doesn't mean the people working on it did "bad work". It reviewed decently well. It was also on gamepass on release.
