Hi,

I am not using the latest version of Firefox. So, time to upgrade.

Couple of questions, though:

1) Do I need to uninstall my current version first?

2) If so, will I loose my profile, plugins, bookmarks, etc?

3) If so, what's the easiest and fastest way to make a back-up of these items?

Thanks in advance!

Regards,

Mark.

As long as you are not running a custom build, you should be able to just install right on top of your old directory. You can delete it first from C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox just to be safe (if you want to). Your profile is stored in a different location than the Mozilla install.

If you wan't to backup your profile just to be safe, make a copy of:

(you have to set windows to show hidden files to see this folder)

C:\Documents and Settings\usernamehere\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\

I had a problem with this, so to be safe I would unistall and it will ask you if you want that folder deleted (c:/program files/Mozilla Firefox) , yes you do. That's the only way I could fix my problem. But after I got it fixed and reinstall all my bookmarks, passwords, extensions worked just fine.

These are the files I leave into my firefox profile when updating to newer version:

bookmarks.html -> bookmarks

cookies.txt -> cookies

history.dat -> history

hostperm.1 -> list of white/black listed sites

key3.db -> needed to decypher signons.txt

localstore.rdf -> window positions, toolbar config etc.

mimetypes.rdf -> customized mimetype handling (Options -> Downloads -> File Types)

prefs.js -> most extensions settings are stored here, also about:config and Tools -> Options changes

signons.txt -> saved passwords/logins

user.js -> custom settings (like user_pref("browser.display.show_image_placeholders", false);)

chrome\userChrome.css -> more custom settings

chrome\userContent.css -> even more custom settings

It is recommended. Uninstalling Firefox does not delete your profile/settings.

2) If so, will I loose my profile, plugins, bookmarks, etc?

Firefox 0.9.x has a wizard that will run the first time to import settings from old version of Firefox and other browsers.
