Where do I find this app?

Recommended Posts

It was suggested that a thread be started to help people new to Linux find apps.

I'll start the ball rolling with a couple of resources:

http://sourceforge.net/

and

http://freshmeat.net/

If anyone is looking for something specific and cannot find a solution, this would be a good place to post your question and get some answers.

I think that I very much agree with you. The whole "HOWTO & FAQ" section is like a dark, musty bookshelf in the far corner of the library. Good stuff is there, but no one visits...

amarok, xmms, (g)mplayer, rhythmbox and totem are often mentioned. There are tons more!

What do you mean by links? You should be able to fire up synaptic and browse the Applications/Mutlimedia section and see (and install!) for yourself! (Y)

Man! I just added # mplayer and other multimedia stuff

deb ftp://ftp.nerim.net/debian-marillat/ unstable main to the repositories and came up with 509 updates? 229MB's!!

Alot of them have familiar names (I'm a 1 month old Ubuntu nOOb), but, holy cow!! How in the world do I know what I need? I have Ubuntu Hoary Hedgehog 5.04 (the free version they sent out free cd's for)? I did update with all the default repositories immediately after figuring out how to do that.

Edit:

I just did a double look and seen that alot of the places added to the repositiries were unstable ones. I removed those, which only left a few new ones. Reloaded list and had NO updates available. That looks better. I think!!

h3xis,

there's Nvu [1] and Quanta+ [2], both have FTP integration (Quanta+ also has WebDAV, sftp and ssh/ scp, courtesy of KDEs KIO architecture). Nvu is more like Dreamweaver, while Quanta+ is more targeted at professional users (integrated PHP autocompletion and debugger, stuff like that). Quanta+ is also not exactly WYSIWYG, it has a similar feature called VPL (visual page layout), some sort of preview, updated in realtime as you code, that also allows to jump to specific parts of the code by selecting it from the preview.
