Paul Scholes Retires from International Football

Recommended Posts

Under-pressure England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson has spoken of his sadness on hearing the shock news that Paul Scholes has decided to end his international career at the age of 29.

The Manchester United midfielder had won 66 caps for England after making his international debut seven years ago.

He scored 14 goals for his country, the last coming against Croatia at Euro 2004.

"I am very sorry that Paul has decided to retire from international football," Eriksson told the FA's official website.

"Paul and I have been speaking about this since Euro 2004 and, while he remained a key part of my plans for the England team, I fully respect his decision.

"Paul is a great player who has given so much to England over the last seven years. He has a very special talent and it has been a privilege working so closely with him.

"I would like to wish Paul every success in the future with Manchester United. He deserves it."

Scholes had admitted the decision had not come easily saying: "I've been considering retiring from international football for a while now.

"I started my England career in 1997 and have enjoyed seven years of great football, playing in the best competitions, with some of the best players, under the best managers.

"Euro 2004 was fantastic but afterwards I felt the time was right for myself and my family to make it my last England appearance.

"I would like to thank everyone at England for the wonderful years I had playing for the team and all the experience I gained. I wish them all the best and good luck for the future."

This is a big shock to me, i realised that he doesnt play as well for them as he does for Man Utd, but he was still a key member for England.

wow i was also upset and shocked when i heard this but i have to say the touring schedle for a footballer can be stressfull for your family so probably thats what swayed his decision....theres so much talent comin up the england ranks that there will be soon a talent like scholes in the england squad :)

    • NVIDIA officially supports Ubuntu, as linked above with the GeForce NOW Hands on I did in collaboration with Paul Hill.
    • TO be clear I am not running linux today, however I keep thinking about it. And I want to make sure there are minimal obstacles if I decide to make that switch in the coming months.
    • Yes, I actually glossed over the Linux part from the OP. You could always go for a 9070 XT and if you really want to play Ray Traced games in the future, GeForce Now is pretty damn good on Linux https://www.neowin.net/news/nvidias-native-geforce-now-app-for-linux-bridges-the-gaming-gap-hands-on/
    • One reason it might be running hotter is dust build up within the cooling or perhaps the paste has dried out. You could always try repasting your old GPU and cleaning the cooler. Your experience in Linux will be much better with an AMD GPU; the performance in gaming is much closer to Windows than nVidia would be. I personally think on Windows, AMD drivers are junk.
    • I reviewed it back in March, but I didn't have a 5070 at the time https://www.neowin.net/reviews/amd-rx-9070-review-vs-rtx-5070-4070-and-rx-9070-xt-7800-xt--just-good-enough/ When I reviewed the 9070 I did have a 5070 to compare it against, so the scores are there for the 9070 XT. it outperforms the 5070 in raster, and is barely neck and neck in Ray Tracing. So it's better than a 5070 in everything but Ray Tracing where it is neck and neck, or just under. To be honest, the uplift from 3080 when it was new to the 9070 XT is not as great a step up. If you can find a used 4080 Super for around the same money, you would probably be better off, but if you only want to buy new then the 16GB 9070 XT is the best value for money in its category.
