SP2 Won't install... (Atapi.sys)

Well I have recieved the final version of SP2 (WindowsBeta release) and am curious if anyone else is having the same problems I am.

As I tried to install the update that was released this morning to WindowsBeta, I get an error noting that the install cannot copy Atapi.sys. I checked google to learn that Atapi.sys is used by daemon tools (which I had installed and running) so I restarted and disabled the application. I then again, tried and god the same error. I rebooted into safe mode, tried once more, and again the error.

I know the file is there, it has to be, but it's fun finding the file on the boot list, as I boot Safe Mode (partition1\windows\system32\drivers\). What else could possible be using the file and what can I do to get SP2 installed.

What I would do is just slipstream it, format, and reinstall everything.

(have you tried uninstalling)

Don't re-install.

Just un-install your emulation programs, that's what causing it.

yep. uninstall Daemon Tools and Alcohol 120%

I've tried to install service packs with those two applications installed and it will just not work.

They are small enough applications that it doesn't really matter that you have to unsinstall them... an extra 2min tops.

just download process explorer and end the atapi.sys

rename the atapi.sys to atapi.sys.old and rerun the install. That's how I have worked around it in the past.

Yeah, it says it's in use but you can just rename/delete it and it will install fine. I had this problem with mskb 331958.

Well I uninstalled daemon and Alcohol and I am now on SP2. :D Thanks for the help guys.

Sorry for bringing up this old thread but i cant get images to the virual drive by right clicking. it results in memory exxception something and crashed explorer.

Using SP2, Alcohol 120. I really like Alcohol 120 and dont want to lose it. Help!

Found the bugger!

In my shell context i had crap load of stuff that i had uninstalled ages ago. Apparently some of it was never full uninstalled even as it was visually removed from the context.

Downloaded a lil program called ShellExView and disabled the crap, right clicking no longer crashes shell. BTW i did my testing with unpatched uxtheme and classic luna.

Hey can someone help me, when i try to install the latest sp2, it says "Access is Denied" in the middle of the installation. I am administrator, and I tried it in safe mode and it still gave me "Access is Denied."

uninstall alcohol 120%

because it use the driver in memory

otherwise, you wont be able to overwrite it...
