thanks for the detailed response, and actually thanks to everyone else who responded as well with info (Y)

i have to go to target now, so i very well may well pick the game up in anticipation of the 17th :woot:

@ jerry, i know im getting into more than i can chew, as CS players are the most hardcore out there, so i figure i might as well get a taste of the blood as soon as possible, but i might just wait as you said. alot depends on if target still even has the game.

You've got a 6800?

I'm jealous....

I get the feeling Valve are going to wait until a crack is up, leave it a few hours, then stop it from working (at least until it's cracked entirely out of Steam). Sort of like FADE. Get people hooked, then take it away. Repeat.

yeah they will

they are watching the forums and the irc channel...

Well, that goes without saying. ;) They've most likely got moles in the major cheating rings too.

Right now we have about 60 Steam content servers running around the world. They are throttled to 100 Mbps, but can handle ~800 Mbps if necessary.

In terms of network bandwidth, we're currently running at 4 Gbps, and will boost to 7 Gbps when we start pre-loading. We have the option of increasing that to 14 Gbps with a phone call (admittedly a really expensive phone call).

Since Half-Life 2 is ~2 GB (or 16 Gb) over the wire, we can serve up about a person/second with a complete copy of the game. These are idealized numbers - the real capacity planning numbers are quite a bit lower.

So pre-loading is a good thing, being able to play before you have a complete copy of the game is a good thing, and having buckets and buckets of bandwidth is a good thing. It's interesting that videogames in addition to being a larger aggregate audience than almost any TV show (and a lot of countries total Internet traffic) are also now becoming one of the largest consumers of bandwidth on the net.

I'm curious if people know of other single applications consuming more than 10 Gbps.

That's a lotta bandwidth.

Wouldn't matter, the non steam cracked version is out there ;)

where's ur css map located?

C:\CSS\cstrike\maps

Don?t know what that has to do with it because the file is in the console folder C:\CSS\cstrike\materials\console

The full error is

Can?t open background image ?Materials/console/background01.vtf

I?ve tried to replace it but there all the same

Nothing worked for me everything I have read and tried always lead to a ?background01.vtf? error. Poo&nb:(; :(

AHHH I Figured it out!! It was my own stupid ass fault

In the shortcut you put :

C:\CSS\hl2.exe -steam -console -game cstrike

BUT!! I put

C:\CSS\hl2.exe -steam -console -game cstrike?

Notice THE ? (Exclamation mark)At the end!!!! That what it was! No freaking wonder I couldn?t find any help on it!!!!!!!

After 3 hours of gaming, I have this to say - "Please god, don't let the hackers into anything that is HL2!"

Well, considering CSS has 'built-in wall hack', I don't think the hackers are going to be stumped at making hacks. Don't even bother PMing me, I'm not giving out the command...

Hey sparkyx, told you your name sounded familiar. I don't look at names that much on forums, but rather sigs/avs. Good to see you got your copy fixed.

Liquid How'd you get fully non-transparent crosshair? I can't find the console command for it and through the options doesn't work...
