AutoPatcher XP 4.6 (August '04 Release) Info

Thanks guys for the quick replies. So basically the tweak version is for people with SP2. That makes sence, thanks again.

Well, it's either for people with SP2 (which need to be careful when running it) or people with SP1 who just like all the bonus features.

Forgot about those people...<off topic> who are those people anyway? hehe

Amazingly, they exist! I've gotten e-mails requesting something like this for awhile, actually. I guess they like going to WU, but enjoy having a package filled with tweaks and stuff. *shrugs* Who am I to question why? ;)

How about this?

For people who need to stay with XP SP1, but don't want to keep getting the SP2 is available when using Automatic Updates...

Too late for this release, but it's small enough and easy enough to add to your own database.

Flish, the 'optional components' and 'registry tweaks' should work fine for SP2 right?

For the most part they should work fine. (Y)

@paratrupr - Thanks man! :D I hope everyone likes it!

i have an interesting suggestion. what are the chances of making a version that will have the option to automatically delete files that are not selected to be installed by default....and in fact remove them from the database. cause i know SLIPXP copies all files to the cd, regardless of whether they are installed or not, and now that i have slipstreamed XP SP2, many of the files will not be needed. and i dont know how fun it would be to figure out and manually search out every filename that doesnt need to be installed. granted i am only interested in the tweaks now since there is only the one 127.0.0.1 resolving issue, which i just install through svcpack.inf during unattended install, it would still be a nice feature for the future.

btw, for those doing unattended installs and using winnt.sif of unattended.txt, use svcpack.inf to do install of service packs and such, also you can use cmdlines.txt and a combined reg file, or multiple reg files to import all tweaks into the DEFAULT_USER profile, making every new account created on the machine inherit all tweaks. neither of these methods run post-install under the admin account, they both run under DEFAULT_USER during setup instead of being started automatically like SLIPXP integrates it.

i think a tweak utility that will export the tweak reg file for use with unattended install would be invauluable since i had to collect mine by hand. and it would not be very difficult to make. seeing to the fact that all you do is add keys and values to known section names in a file. it would also be cool to have a util that will integrate all selected patches and service packs and updates into the svcpack.inf for automatic install during unattended installation. Flish, if i had the time i would code it myself (it would only be like 10 lines of code...literally) and give you the source so you can add it into the post-sp2 autopatcher version. perhaps i'll find some time to do it and you can add the features. i think winguide's tweak manager exports selected tweaks to reg files already...but it's not free, and i know programs like RegEditR puts .reg files together if you paste one into the other, it concatenates duplicate section names and puts all keys and values under them.

i have used autopatcher for quite some time and was always bothered by the fact that slipxp copied all unused files during preinstall to $OEM$\$1\ even if they were not used and that my tweak settings were not applied to new accounts.

let me know if this post is too long. LOL.

keep up the good work Flish. let me know what you think.

Leon

I donated (twice actually) and I didn't get any e-mail or anything.

Neither did I (I send it to myself to make sure it sends). I promise it sent, and it seems most got it already. If you don't get it within the next few hours PM me. (Y)

Sorry guys... it looks like the e-mail messed up for some of the donators, I apologize. Anyways, I think I have enough links to post today, so expect it within the next hour or so. (Y) Last night we got an emergency call from Maple's sister needing us to run to the airport to pick up her boyfriend so we were gone the whole evening.

EDIT - Just noticed, it seems those running hotmail (or others) may need to check their junkmail folder for the e-mail. Dunno why, but that's where it was sent for mine.

    • I can name 10x that on why not to switch.... It's funny outlook/office are going towards web app wrappers, and then MS is now preaching native apps again.... ugh can we just pick a lane and stay in it
    • Absolutely NOBODY has suggested such a conclusion. I am affirming the sober reality check that AV2's overall market adoption will take longer than AV1's adoption rate -- which, by the way, is the whole point of the article! While PCI-SIG is productive (on paper), other WGs have created all sorts of confusing progress plans that consumers have tuned-out of their improvements... HTML/W3C, USB, HDMI, BT, WIFI (ieee802.11) as a few other groups where spec naming conventions, split progress paths, overlapping ambitions... I'm not critiquing the AV specs group; I'm simply affirming that adoption for AV2 faces headwinds beyond the macroeconomics of it all.
