I hate Norton Antivirus.

Question

A typical checkup with Norton Antivirus:

"4 viruses have been detected"

*clicks 'Repair Files'*

"Repair failed. Would you like to quarantine?"

*clicks 'Quarantine files'*

"Quarantine failed. Would you like to delete?"

*clicks 'Delete files'*

"Delete failed. Would you like to ignore?"

*goes off in search of files. First two are deleted by selecting them and pressing the 'delete' key on my keyboard. Second two don't exist.*

Is there something better than this? Please don't tell me to use AVG, I've tried it and I don't like its instability.

Well said indeed, im sick of the people nowadays, complaing about oh my this is to slow, well damnit learn how to use a computer correctly, eplore all possible options and configurations before you start bitching, half kids nowadays dont know anything about pc's cause they never had to deal with dos at all win3.11 and stuff like that now their bitching at the smallest thing, hell ima tell u i havent had a virus on my pc's for 2 years, never had spyware for least a year and havent seen a popup since firefox first came around, now we have lameass scriptkiddies who think their hotshots , and get the smallest unharmful virus and they get ****ed at the program, come on grow up and learn how to use a pc

People only say that NOD32 is good because it does a better job managing memory. NOD32 is still VERY COMPLICATED and not great for the new home user, throw in its ugly interface and What home user is going to buy it and configure all of its options (which is a lot). So dont start telling me that NOD32 is even comparable to Norton and McAfee, because it isnt. It is work in progress, imo.

you actually think this is "well said"? I think its laughable

Learn to CONFIGURE your AntiVirus...Norton is one of the best AntiVirus', From version 1.0 to Version 11.0 (2005). Takes barely no resources.

wow takes barely no resources?its a well-known for being a resource hog,u can go to anandtech and ask the same qn and they will tell u the same thing, hell they even have a thread on antivirus softwares that doesnt even mention norton at all

dont tell me those guys arent credible

i used norton for 2yrs+ and 2003 was a hogger,sucks up 12mb+

that includes the ccvtmanager, the nav process itself takes up around 11mb

Also, you may want to try something called "LiveUpdate", its this thing that they include to update your virus defs, that way, it WILL detect new viruses and will attempt to remove them. (Also, i'd be interested to know how much configuration you went through, because Out of the Box, Norton AntiVirus tries to configure itself for your memory)

i update my applications all the time, not to mention theres no t much thing to configure because by default the settings are decent enough,i mean what do u expect from a "user-friendly" s/w?

I have yet to see someone bitch about activation, but again, they have help on there website,GO USE IT. Norton AntiVirus 2004 did include a problem with Activation, its the same as ANY software, introducing a new feature will produce bugs. They issued a fix shortly and its now available, they even are resetting activation counts for the users who were affected by the bug.i didnt try 2004,its practically the same thing packaged in a so-called new version, the only notable "features" were more memory hogging+spyware scanning

ha,i rather use some specialised s/w to deal with that

McAfee has had the same weaknesses as Norton AntiVirus, in fact, both still have weaknesses in terms of being unable to repair newer viruses. If your gonna bitch about Norton, why dont you start bitching about McAfee as well. McAfee's strong point is that it does a little bit better of a job at configuring memory.

why shld i be bitching about mcafee...i mean both suck in handling newer viruses but mcafee is slightly better right?so just swallow the less bitter pill and keep quiet, the only problem is the spamming windows, but that can be fixed

People only say that NOD32 is good because it does a better job managing memory.

only?why, its virus detection rate is very accurate and much better than nav which doesnt seem to detect everything NOD32 is still VERY COMPLICATED and not great for the new home user, throw in its ugly interface and What home user is going to buy it and configure all of its options (which is a lot).

i think ur living in the stone age, frankly speaking its quite simple to configure and takes around 3minutes

the ugly interface,i find its ok,u mean u stare at the console every single day???just configure the s/w and ur all set to go,thats all.i wont even consider a nicely packaged av but does a half-ass job, than a much better av with acceptable interface

So dont start telling me that NOD32 is even comparable to Norton and McAfee, because it isnt. It is work in progress, imo.

it is comparable to either of them,in fact better than them,if the GUI is all u look for in a antivirus s/w,then shame on you, seems like u have a long way to go if u want to talk about configuring av s/w

So I guess my final words are to stop the bitching about Norton, Use the Self Help/Customer Support, and Configure it.

heres my final words for u,stop defending norton with some mindless crap and ditch it,there are wayyyy much better alternatives for u

in fact i recommend,kaspersky,nod32,bitdefender,panda and avg

these s/w are decent enough and less memory hogging, tho kaspersky seems to be slightly out of the league when it comes to memory handling

bitdefender has a sygate firewall for its management console

for ppl who bend too much for GUI,take panda

for more aggressive virus-tottling s/w,nod32 is ur best bet

i use norton internet security 2004 for AV and firewall. it might be a bit of a hog but i'm not too worried - i've tried panda platinum antivirus (includes firewall) and pc-cillin internet security before, noticed no improvement really. also, i had to unistall both of them because they interfered with my tv card. apparently many firewalls **** with it. norton's is one which doesn't so i went back to it. panda found a virus when i installed it that norton never found, so now i do online scans with panda just to check up.
