i have a weird problem......at night i will get disconnected once it gets dark and then reconnect at a slower speed(26.4-33.6) and have slow download rates all night (1-2k/s) and getting disconnected every 10 minutes where as during the day i can stay connected all day with a good connection speed(46.6) and have download rates of 4k/s........this is nothing to do with my isp as i know other people using the same isp....i was thinking maybe it had something to do with it being cold at night effecting my line.....maybe moisture in the line?

Have the phone company check the lines inside and outside of your house. I had some dialup problems and after calling them I'm now experiencing the fastest and most consistent dialup I've ever had (no sarcasm intended). However, since I'm a starving student I have the el cheapo package and it didn't cost anything for them to check and replace some of the lines in my house. Had I been a normal customer it would've cost $80.00 per hour, so be careful if you want them to do some work.

just a thought

I worked for a ISP in san antonio texas, we had a bunch of dialup customers, and this would be a somewhat common call. There are a few main reasons this happens.. most of the time (like you said) its not your isp. It is most likely the phone lines. What happens sometimes, when it gets really busy (atleast here) is SBC will run out of quality phone lines in an area, and when you try to connect all the newer lines are in use, and you get put on an older line, which most can have a lesser quality. Normally phone lines last a very long time, they dont degrade easily, but it does happen from time to time.

Another possbile reason is when it would rain here, we would get alot of calls about disconnects and what not, lines would apparently get wet. People would get worse connection speeds, all the way down to 4 kbps. When you call the phone company (if its SBC) they will attempt to do a "over the phone checkup" and tell you that your lines are fine. DONT LISTEN TO THEIR ****. You need to request that someone comes out, as far as i know SBCs policy is that they will NOT charge you if they dont come inside of your house to check lines. Have them check the outside of the house etc.

A few things you can check/try.

Do you hear static on the phone lines at all, or humming, basically any noise you would not usually hear.. is not good. it will cause you problems.

I would attempt (if you have a long enough phone cord) to hookup directly to the OUTSIDE box, there is a customer acccess section of the phone box on the outside of the house, you will need a screwdriver to open it, but inside you will see a place where you can hookup a regular phone cord.. try connecting (when youa are having problems inside) to this outside box. IF that works it could be your lines inside your house.
