[Olympics BBall] Aus vs USA

Recommended Posts

theres a difference in the teams, the original dream team could probably beat the current us outfit by 30 points on any night

No doubt about that. The Dream Team has been getting weaker and weaker with each Olympics. The first Dream Team in 1992 is probably one of the best, if not THE best basketball team ever assembled. They destroyed every single one of their opponents.

I remember when chuck daly was the coach of the original dream team. He never got off his chair or called a timeout. This Larry Brown cannot put his ass down and stop yelling.

How do you coach players like Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, etc.? Those guys knew how to play against various factors (zone defense, traps, double-teams, big teams, small teams). Even Christian Laettner had the knowledge to play from his 4 years at Duke under Coach K. This year's team has MAYBE 3 players that played more than 3 years of college ball.

Believe me, college basketball (college sports for that matter) are alot more important than people think. The rules are more diverse and vary, teams are very different which gives you a chance to play against multiple defenses/offenses/situations, and the coaching is alot more direct. I think the NBA experiment should be over, it's not even fun to watch.

I agree with you there! I prefer college over pro anyday. Can't wait for USC's first football game. :-)

I think the main differnce w/ the "Dream Team" has nothing to do with coaches, hype, or talent though even. I think it has to do with thte quality of person that is palying now. Those big names you mentioned like Jordan, Johnson, etc, they were heros. They were awesome players that even non-sports fans enjoyed watching. They respected people though. They didn't talk down to people. THey didn't go around screaming we're the best. I think if these new players concentrated less on their gold rings and mercedes and more on learning to play OUTSIDE the key, they'd improve. Their way too concerned with layups and having their face on a poster or soda bottle....

Ahhh, USC. I go to the Notre Dame game every other year they play in LA. Hate the Trojans! :)

I agree with your comment on the respect issues. I remember in 1992 before every game, the players were willing to take pictures with the opposing team, sign autographs, joke around with them, etc. Of course, they laid the hammer down during the game. On one of the Michael Jordan videos ("Air Time"), there's a little chapter on the Olympics (preliminaries and the Games) and they have video of the practices. Guys were going hard during practice, never letting up, and even trash talking each other (this was the summer after the Bulls beat the Blazers and Drexler and Jordan would chat it up; Magic would tell Michael he had 3 more to go until he got 5, etc. etc.) What really impresses me as well is that was Jordan's SECOND Olympics, and he respected it just as much as he did in 1984.

I would love to see the Dream Team (there's only one) play now against these improved internation teams. I'm sure they would still win, but it would give us a chance to REALLY witness how great those players were. I would love to see Larry Bird, Scottie Pippen, and Chris Mullin break down zone defenses with their shooting.

    • Ladybird Browser is no longer accepting outside contributions thanks to AI by David Uzondu The Ladybird Browser Project has announced it will no longer accept public pull requests and will limit changes to those made by its maintainers as it works towards its first alpha release. According to Ladybird's creator Andreas Kling, this is "not a change we make lightly," but the rapid shift in AI capabilities forced their hand. Previously, a massive PR implied that the person behind it put a lot of care into the code and is ready to "answer for the consequences." Now with AI, anyone can generate a PR without even understanding the bug fix or feature they want merged. The blog post goes on to say that the team is closing all open public pull requests immediately, and that maintainers will not treat external forks as a review queue for upstream Ladybird. Instead, the team wants outside contributors to focus on reporting bugs and running tests. Kling started Ladybird back in 2019 as LibHTML, a simple HTML viewer for his hobby operating system, SerenityOS, but by September 2022, it had turned into a full-fledged browser project. What sets Ladybird apart from the likes of Google Chrome, Apple Safari, or Mozilla Firefox is its totally independent engine, which does not rely on pre-existing codebases. The project maintains a strict policy against default search engine deals or user data monetization, keeping development funded entirely by donations and sponsorships. Generative AI is forcing open source project maintainers to rethink how they handle public code contributions (and the whole open-source thing in general). One month ago, a leak about the National Health Service (NHS) suggested the organization was planning to take all of its public repositories private ahead of a May 11 deadline, thanks to Mythos (an AI model that Anthropic believes is too dangerous to be released to the public) and its ability to find and write exploits for zero-day vulnerabilities. Thankfully, the Government Digital Service (GDS) issued a counter-report titled "AI, open code and vulnerability risk in the public sector" that stopped the shutdown by pointing out that hiding code does not improve security.

    • I like the show more options. The only problem with it is that it's not always in a consistent spot in the menu. If the copy/paste/cut, happens to show on top, then more option is the last in the menu. But if copy/paste/cut happens to show on the bottom, then more options is before the copy/paste/cut. But I do like the more options because it hides the stuff that I rarely use. But I would like to choose what it is or isn't hiding. That would make it better.
    • I wonder if "put it back the way it was for decades" ever crossed their minds? 🤣
    • Rescind the stupid "Show more options" in context menus and just give us the full menu instead of adding more steps to get to what we want. The "simpler by default" makes me think they'll go in the opposite direction. Every context menu should have a configure button so you can pick and choose what options should be shown, I know you can do that with some registry fu but that shouldn't be required.
