HP Pavilion 7855

(Cliff notes at the end)

I'm going to be giving away my HP Pavilion 7855, but before I do; I thought the lease I should do is upgrade it to the MAX (as possible). I'm so use to building PC's & know the full specs. Guess that's the problem about name-brand clones, is sometimes things are not always as stated.

Anyways, below is a link on what HP says the computer should have been shipped with & I noticed a few small things that are different from my own.

Mostly trying to figure (for sure), what motherboard I have in here. HP says it should be ASUS, but Belarc Advisor tells me it's made by Trigem Computer, Inc. Cognac. I opened the computer, but found no make model or name (odd).

The only reason I'm looking into this, is I'm thinking of upgrading the Processor from 1GHz (Pentium III Socket 370) too maybe something a little higher & am unsure if it could support it. I've already replaced the standard 128 SDram (100Bus) with 512SDram (133Bus) four years ago.

So I was wondering if anyone knows if I could do this? I'm looking to go as high as maybe 1.4Ghz, but anything higher; then what it has now, would be good (that & I'm sure I can't go any higher).

And yes, they do have CPU's that go above 1Ghz on a Socket 370. Don't know why so many people say, they don't.

Also, does anyone know how high of a hard drive I could go? Don't think I'll upgrade it (using a WD 60GB), but it would be good to know.

Belarc Advisor = Phoenix Technologies LTD 2.06 02/23/01 (not sure if that's right)

I still have to get a new video card. The PC uses the shared ram, for video. Right now it reads 32MB, with the newest drivers (was 16MB). Finding a PCI video card with more then 32MB is being a pain (don't think they make any, but someone said they do).

The only other thing I plan on doing, is giving it a better CPU fan (as I'll have too if I upgrade the CPU) & finally add a ram cooling kit. I'd give the hard drive a fan also, but I think that's a bit over the top & I really don't want to be adding a new power supply.

Back on topic; Does anyone know if I could really upgrade the CPU?

CLIFF NOTES: I need to know how much of a CPU & possibly a video card upgrade I could do. I'm not to worried about upgrading the hard drive & I'm already at max, when it comes to ram. Using a HP Pavilion 7855 1Ghz, 512SDram, 60GB WD HD, 12x dvd, 8x4x32 CD-RW, 810 Intel Chipset (onboard vid 16 - 32mb - see whole post for details on vid)

1GHz is as fast as that board can take (in fact, maybe even just a 933).

Jeez, that's a long a$$ post for just asking how much you can upgrade it . . .

LOL

I started off small, but then I just got into further detail. I didn't want anyone thinking, that I didn't look into the matter myself, before asking for help.

Are sure? *hopes your wrong*

If so, what can I do about upgrading the video?

no it can take a 1.2 ghz the reason it says Cognac is because its got a custom bios. Like gateway had the Essential 950c i had a 950/1000 megs celeron, it said it was made by a company named brooking i looked on the board and noticed that it had an MS number written on it and it said MS-6312 and thats one of MSI's Custom mATXboards. the 82810E Chipset will take 1.2ghz and 512 of PC100/133 memory, upto 1.2 tualatin pentium 3processors. email me at [email protected] and ill tell you more about it HP even says the bios is made by cognac

Got a little more info off my bois

Phoenix 4.0 Release 6.0

Phoenix Technologies LTD 2.06 02/23/01

Why do I have to email you? Can't you post here or send me a pm?

1.2Ghz, huh? Was kind of wishing for a little bit more (1.4), but I guess that's better then nothing. Any idea on what kind of video card I could add, if possible. I didn't see a way to turn of the onboard video in my bois though, so that has me worried. I know I'll be stuck with a PCI card though.

Edit: Tualatin P3? I would think that's a bit over the top, but would be cool.

Edit: Nevermind. On second though, it maybe able to take a Tualatin P3. But unsure as I'm using a 810 chipset.

yes it will take tualitinand there is one more thing it will automaticall disable onboard, and even if it doesnt you can still stick the second card in mine didnt give me the option either so i just added an FX5200Ultra PCI when it came out it the card was all the rage like a yr or 2 ago...

dual display lol

So the basic consencise is that I could go as high is maybe 1.2Ghz, no higher? Was kind of hopping maybe the max 1.4, but I guess it really will not make much of a differince.

FX5200Ultra PCI - nVidia, right? Anyone else have an idea about the video? Remember I'm stuck using a 133 Bus speed
