My CPU temperature is lying to me.

Recommended Posts

My average CPU temperature always has and always will be from 52 to about 58. I recently installed a new heatsink/fan, and that didn't change it much.

Then one day, I was playing a rather CPU intensive game, i left with a temperature of 57 (celcius), and i came back with one of 42. I thought it must be a glitch. I later turned off my computer for the night.

The next morning, i turned it on. CPU temp of 30. 'Okay', i thought. This is normal when its been off for a while, maybe even with a bias of a few degrees, since my room is actually cooler. But then after running some CPU intensive tasks, the temperature remained at 30.

I later discovered that my CPU temperature, no matter what program i run to check it, only updates after each reboot. So would anyone like to tell me what steps i should go through to install a new thermistor diode?

youve tried "Speedfan" right? i use that, its very good... mine idles at 42C, nothing wrong with that.... but it's probably your refresh rate to your computer. i would check BIOS and look where it shows the temperate.. see if it's updating.

Tell us what MB you have and maybe check out the company's public forums as you might need to configure speedfan properly, I use it and it is great

I've tried Speedfan, MotherboardMonitor5, and my own system's bios. I don't think the configuration of Speedfan could result in proper temperatures if it displays the same results as my bios.

I have an ECS (Elite Computer Systems, i believe) K7VMM+ motherboard. Very cheap crappy motherboard made in China.

Word to the wise, never use an Elitegroup motherboard. I recently changed my friend's ECS K7S5A mobo to a Biostar M7NCD. She (yes, she) noticed a rather large difference in performance.

What'd help more is if everytime I got there and not finding a load of spyware & adware installed.

well it was a 3.0C GHz running on stock cooling in 90-100?F weather...so I think the actual temp was probably less than half of what was being displayed anyhow.

Or your diodes aren't working properly. I've seen them fluxuate up to 20 degrees off normal, but most of the cooler temperatures I see are the believeable ones.

A little test i developed to determine your CPU diode's accuracy:

-Leave your computer off to the point where it is at room temperature, overnight maybe?

-Accurately measure your room's current temperature. Easy enough for me since i have a high quality german thermometer, but you may try opening the windows and checking the weather network too.

-Boot your PC and immediately go to the BIOS and check your CPU's current temperature. Subtract a degree or two, and subtract the current room temperature. That's your CPU thermistor diode's low bias.

Of course, the bias doesn't have to be linear, it might change when you're talking full load. Who knows.
