DVD+R -R ?R %R *R

For backing up movies or program DVD's you would want to use DVD-R or DVD+R. For storing your mp3 collection, downloads, documents, photos, doing video editing, etc. DVD-RAM would be the best choice in my opinion. DVD-RW and DVD+RW can be rewritten about 1000 times while DVD-RAM can be rewritten 100,000. They are also random access and have built-in error correction; you can format them as NTFS or UDF and use them like a big floppy disk. :)

I always wondered the same thing about Magneto Optical. I have a Fujitsu MO drive that uses 640MB 3.5" disks and I love it myself. It's the best format for archiving so I got it for that purpose. They're almost indestructible, magnets will not harm them and they should last a lifetime but for some reason they never took off here. They did in Japan though from what I understand, and now there are 1.3GB models. I don't know how much the 5.25" type holds but it's huge.

I think the main thing hurting DVD-RAM is that not many if any DVD-ROM drives can read them, and a lot of people get freaked out by the cartridge (you can buy the bare discs too). Panasonic makes set-top PVR's and camcorders that use them, so I was hoping that would help them take off.

Then again, I still think it SUCKS that Iomega was so greedy that they screwed up getting the Zip 100 drive as the default floppy disk replacement. Morons. If they had just played ball...

Still, I do dig DVD-R and DVD-RW quite a lot. A nice compliment to CD-R/RW, that is for sure. :)

Hang onto the railing - Blue-Ray is coming! :omg:
