Original postings (outdated):

Greetings fellow Neowinians.

I wanted to announce this when I had proper permission from everyone to actually release it, but with all of the recent talk regarding the WinRAR GUI I might as well post the information.

I have been working on a small WinRAR GUI patch based on FOOOD's icons. It began as a private project, but as it progressed, I thought about the possibility of releasing it. The patcher (GUI-based) weighs in at around 270 KB and currently works on the 3.40 B3/4 releases.

This required more time than anything, but I will release it if I can secureUPDATE #1: Eugene Roshal from WinRAR has given his permission. Thanks Eugene.neUPDATE #2: FOOOD from FOOOD's Icons has given his permission. FOOOD is sending me some tweaks to be implemented in the released version. Look for such a release following soon after. I will also contact Eugene Roshal to try to determine an estimated release date for 3.40 final, as only supporting the final version would be much easier. Thanks FOOOD.ODUPDATE #3: WinRAR 3.40 final is not expected until an estimated mid-September (get those last bug reports in!). After I receive the updated components from FOOOD, I will decide how to proceed.o UPDATE #4: FOOOD's updates:yes: arrived . I think everyone will be quite pleased. I will get to work :cool:ng them .emUPDATE #5: Screenshot previews using FOOOD's updates added as images #7 and #8 below. Please note that these are not final, as there are still images to replace (such as the arrows, disk drive, key, etc.). The main buttons are at, what effectively is, 36x36. I am trying to find a work around to this limitation right now. These icons really start looking great at 48x48, but they REALLY begin shining at 64 x 64. They are fantastically detailed and of typical FOOOD quality. I really want to show that off. tUPDATE #6: The icon size limitation I alluded to in UPDATE #5 :yes:xed!. I want to thank Eugene Roshal from WinRAR for taking a second out of working on 3.40 Final to send me some hints on this issue. If you use WinRAR on a regular basis, please register and support them. Also, if you enjoy all of the work FOOOD contributes for FREE to the community, please consider donating a little som:cool: to him .imUPDATE #7: I attached four more screenshots below to wet your appetite. I also moved the 'Alpha/Concept' screenshots into links for our modem viewers. When the patch is released, you will have a choice of which pixel size icons work best for you. The exact options have yet to be finalized, although 48 (shown below in the new screenshots), 64 (also shown below in the new screenshots), and 72 pixel versions :De safe bets :D. This way, you can tailor the interface more to your preference. More to follow... fUPDATE #8: I MIGHT release this patch for B6 so some foks can test it out (if I am satisfied with it, and FOOOD passes his final approval). I added five new screenshots below and moved older ones to links. 'B3' has a few toolbar icon updates, context icons, file icons, 'About' picture. More to follow... fUPDATE #9: I posted a small update here. More to follow... fUPDATE #10: I just had my power restored following Hurricane Frances. I will have to catch up on the thread. Attached a few screenshots of 'Beta 4' below. More to follow... fUPDATE #11: We are still ;)rking on it ;). WinRAR is getting new 'SFX' and 'Recovery' file icons, as well as tweaked toolbar and context menu icons:cool:y tuned .edUPDATE #12: Okay folks, here is the deal. FOOOD and I are in totally different time zones. When I am awake, he is asleep (and vice versa). This makes turn-around time on 'suggestions/receiving new files' a bit long sometimes.

We are adding a few more cool things at the last minute, so I think everyone will be quite happy with it.

Thanks again for all of the comments...I know you folks want to play with it and we are trying our best to get it out.

Regards.

UPDATE #13: As this patch has progressed, we have continuously identified areas we could improve/expand upon. Although we are open to additional tweaking in the future, we want this to be as complete as possible right out the door. The enthusiasm in this thread has been (and currently is) great to see and is most definitely a motivation to make you folks as happy as possible with the finished 'product'.

Instead of a rush job, we want to make sure we implement the highest quality artwork in all areas of WinRAR. As FOOOD mentioned, time sometimes becomes a constraint. While this project has taken longer than originally anticipated, its scope of coverage has also increased over what was originally planned. Let it be known that we are working to the best of our ability to make this happen as soon as we can, with the highest quality possible. pUPDATE #14: As FOOOD mentioned, additions to the patch are complete. All that remains is writing/organizing the copyright text, completing the Readme, and compiling together the patcher executable. We are in th;)homestretch ;). reUPDATE #15: Greetings folks. The complete download package has been sent off to FOOOD for his final approval and posting. It weighs in at 3.82 MB, which includes several file type icons created by FOOOD, documentation, and, of course:Dthe patches :D. Hold tight..ldUPDATE #16: Announcing the release of the WinRAR 3.40 GUI Patch v1.0 (English only at this time)!

Sorry. Just hate the TEST icon and the REPAIR icons you have in there now. The one previous set, the large blue Check and the single Wrench with the blue looked much better and fit the theme better. Silver wrench does not look as good as the blue one did.

Most folks may dig it, but I think I'm just gonna pass on this thing. You are so over-thinking it that it is getting worse instead of better, imo.

Just so people don't think I am just ignoring this, we are discussing over PM.

are there new icons for the files (zip, rar, etc) and the main program?

No problem. You're free to choose whether or not you use the patch once it's released :)

The patch hasn't been released yet, so nothing is final until it's er... final

I don't like the blue wrench, I'm not happy with it.

I've tried tweaking it but still don't like it. Shouldn't I have some say what's used here?

I've sent a new Repair icon to Sentient PC to try. If if looks better we'll keep it, if it doesn't then we won't

We're not going to please everyone with the choices of icons we use.

Some people will prefer the changes we make, some won't.

I have to admit, the latest set Sentient PM'd me looks really, really good. A few tweaks here and there on that maybe and I'd be drooling over 'em. :) As it is, the last one he sent me looks ready to be beta tested. (Y)

Sizes more consistent, colors more consistent, easier to read. Dig 'em much better.

What is Reshacker?  I'll try a Google search, but wanted to ask just in case.

Thanks,

BK

Resource Hacker is a freeware utility to view, modify, add, delete and extract resources in 32bit Windows executables. It incorporates an internal resource script compiler and decompiler and works on all 32 Bit Windows OS.

here, author's homepage seems like down :(

did you use reshacker?

https://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?act=...ost&p=584490294

It is done mostly by scripts I wrote at the moment, although putting it all into a 'RAR Skinners GUI' would certainly be neat.? A project for the future, no doubt.

Not to say you couldn't for some things, but there is no way to do some of the editing I had to do in regards to altering button sizes, special ordering of icon size/color depth groupings, etc.

    • Microsoft Flight Simulator's City Update 15 enhances Midwest cities by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe The third major city update of the year has landed for the original Microsoft Flight Simulator and the 2024 release. The latest drop is upgrading the visuals and regional accuracy of three metropolitan regions in the American states of Illinois, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. The 15th city update is adding eight new areas of interest that have been enhanced with high-fidelity TIN (triangulated irregular network) surface texturing in the mentioned regions. The free update highlights Chicago, Elgin, Cicero, and Arlington Heights in Illinois, as well as Minneapolis, St. Paul, Bloomington, Duluth, Brooklyn Park, Woodbury, Lakeville, Plymouth, and Blaine in Minnesota. In Wisconsin, the development has also upgraded the lands and buildings of Milwaukee, Madison, and Racine. The update lands just as one of the world's largest enthusiast flight simulation conventions, FlightSimExpo, kicks off in downtown St. Paul, Minnesota, on June 14. The Flight Sim development team's 40-minute keynote at the event can be watched here. At the same time, Microsoft is bringing the 6-seat, single-engine, multi-use light civil airplane Piper M600 into the game as a part of its Expert Series 2 program. This premium plane can be purchased from the in-game marketplace for $24.99. City Update 15: The United States Midwest is now available in Microsoft Flight Simulator, as well as the newer Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, as an optional download. It can be accessed across Steam and the Microsoft Store for PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5, as well as Xbox and PC Game Pass subscriptions. Xbox One, mobile, and PC players can also jump into the new content using Xbox Cloud Gaming if they have a Game Pass Ultimate membership. The game must be updated to the latest version to download this free update from the in-game marketplace.
    • Five things you might have missed during Apple's WWDC 2026 by Aditya Tiwari Image: Apple Apple's annual developer event, WWDC 2026, happened from June 8 through June 12. We have already covered several new features and updates that the iPhone maker unveiled during the official keynote. Apple took Google's help and finally announced the upgraded Siri AI personal assistant, which now comes with an app. Moreover, a truckload of Apple Intelligence features took the center stage. That said, this year's WWDC is a bit different, and you might have noticed or missed the following stuff: Apple's ongoing unification of platforms Image: Apple One thing Apple is widely known for is its seamless hardware-software ecosystem. The company added a new chapter in 2020, when it began the Apple Silicon transition and launched macOS 11 Big Sur with native ARM support. Some major changes happened last year as well, when Apple renamed all of its operating systems to version 26 and introduced the Liquid Glass design language. Until WWDC 2025, Apple keynotes had dedicated segments for iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, and other operating systems, in which the company discussed each in detail. The WWDC 2026 keynote was different, and Apple allotted most of the screen time to Apple Intelligence and Siri. It didn't even publish separate press releases on its website for different operating systems. While it might seem surprising at first, it shows how Apple plans to move forward with its software ecosystem. Be it the Liquid Glass changes, child safety updates, or other features, they are mostly rolling out across multiple platforms. In other words, Apple is slowly blurring the line between its operating systems and achieving feature parity wherever possible. It's easy to rule out that someone in Apple's marketing team forgot to press the publish button. Everything is a calculated move when it comes to a company like Apple. Putting Apple Intelligence left, right, and center hints that the OS itself is no longer the product anymore. It's Siri, not Pepsi Time and again, various Apple products have been compared to unrelated things and turned into meme material. You might have heard about the "cheese grater" Mac Pro or the "trash can" Mac Pro, to name a few. It's Siri's turn this time. The upgraded AI assistant got a fresh logo, and people have started comparing it with Pepsi. There are other contenders, such as the Sony Ericsson logo and the Yin and Yang symbol. Shot on iPhone. Edited on Mac Image: Apple Apple has been putting the iPhone's camera muscles to the test on various occasions. Even NASA astronauts took it to Space earlier this year and captured some out-of-this-world photos. Recently, Apple TV streamed the first major live sporting event shot entirely on iPhone 17 Pro: an MLS match featuring the LA Galaxy vs. the Houston Dynamo FC. The 'Pro' iPhone has also been used to shoot Apple events in recent years. It's "Scary Fast" Mac event in 2023 was among the earliest attempts, and the tradition trickled down to the WWDC 2026 keynote, which ended with the tag line "Shot on iPhone. Edited on Mac." It's unsurprising to see Apple flexing the camera capabilities of its Pro models, especially when it has been baking professional-grade features, including ProRes RAW and Genlock. Hints for the foldable Apple has been sitting on the foldable iPhone for so long. There is still confusion over when the company will make it official. A recent report said that the iPhone Fold might get delayed as Apple is struggling to perfect its hinge mechanism. But Apple has been dropping hints here and there. A developer dug into the iOS 27 beta code and found internal references about device folding states. As verified by Macworld, the code includes references to "foldState" and "angleDegrees" internal status values, which are apparently designed to tell apps if a device is folded and at what angle. As of now, no other Apple device uses these states. The publication also found internal code suggesting Apple has been testing a device with both Touch ID and Dynamic Island, a combo that doesn't exist today. Last event as Apple CEO Image: Apple Tim Cook's bond with Apple is now almost three decades old, having started in 1998 as the SVP of Worldwide Operations. Back in August 2011, Steve Jobs stepped down as Apple CEO months before his passing, and Cook took charge. Now, the baton has been passed to the hardware chief, John Ternus, who will take over the role on September 1. WWDC 2026 is the last major Apple Event for Tim Cook as CEO. We have seen so much during Cook's tenure over the years, much of which defines Apple as we know it today. From new hardware product lines like Apple Watch, AirPods, Apple Vision Pro, and Apple Silicon, to boosting Apple's services business with Apple Music, Apple TV, Apple Pay, Apple Arcade, Apple Fitness+, Apple Care One, and more. That said, the first developer betas for Apple's latest operating systems are now available. You can check if your device is supported on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27 Golden Gate, watchOS 27, and other platforms. What's your favorite feature that Apple announced this year at WWDC 2026? Tell us in the comments.
