Original postings (outdated):

Greetings fellow Neowinians.

I wanted to announce this when I had proper permission from everyone to actually release it, but with all of the recent talk regarding the WinRAR GUI I might as well post the information.

I have been working on a small WinRAR GUI patch based on FOOOD's icons. It began as a private project, but as it progressed, I thought about the possibility of releasing it. The patcher (GUI-based) weighs in at around 270 KB and currently works on the 3.40 B3/4 releases.

This required more time than anything, but I will release it if I can secureUPDATE #1: Eugene Roshal from WinRAR has given his permission. Thanks Eugene.neUPDATE #2: FOOOD from FOOOD's Icons has given his permission. FOOOD is sending me some tweaks to be implemented in the released version. Look for such a release following soon after. I will also contact Eugene Roshal to try to determine an estimated release date for 3.40 final, as only supporting the final version would be much easier. Thanks FOOOD.ODUPDATE #3: WinRAR 3.40 final is not expected until an estimated mid-September (get those last bug reports in!). After I receive the updated components from FOOOD, I will decide how to proceed.o UPDATE #4: FOOOD's updates:yes: arrived . I think everyone will be quite pleased. I will get to work :cool:ng them .emUPDATE #5: Screenshot previews using FOOOD's updates added as images #7 and #8 below. Please note that these are not final, as there are still images to replace (such as the arrows, disk drive, key, etc.). The main buttons are at, what effectively is, 36x36. I am trying to find a work around to this limitation right now. These icons really start looking great at 48x48, but they REALLY begin shining at 64 x 64. They are fantastically detailed and of typical FOOOD quality. I really want to show that off. tUPDATE #6: The icon size limitation I alluded to in UPDATE #5 :yes:xed!. I want to thank Eugene Roshal from WinRAR for taking a second out of working on 3.40 Final to send me some hints on this issue. If you use WinRAR on a regular basis, please register and support them. Also, if you enjoy all of the work FOOOD contributes for FREE to the community, please consider donating a little som:cool: to him .imUPDATE #7: I attached four more screenshots below to wet your appetite. I also moved the 'Alpha/Concept' screenshots into links for our modem viewers. When the patch is released, you will have a choice of which pixel size icons work best for you. The exact options have yet to be finalized, although 48 (shown below in the new screenshots), 64 (also shown below in the new screenshots), and 72 pixel versions :De safe bets :D. This way, you can tailor the interface more to your preference. More to follow... fUPDATE #8: I MIGHT release this patch for B6 so some foks can test it out (if I am satisfied with it, and FOOOD passes his final approval). I added five new screenshots below and moved older ones to links. 'B3' has a few toolbar icon updates, context icons, file icons, 'About' picture. More to follow... fUPDATE #9: I posted a small update here. More to follow... fUPDATE #10: I just had my power restored following Hurricane Frances. I will have to catch up on the thread. Attached a few screenshots of 'Beta 4' below. More to follow... fUPDATE #11: We are still ;)rking on it ;). WinRAR is getting new 'SFX' and 'Recovery' file icons, as well as tweaked toolbar and context menu icons:cool:y tuned .edUPDATE #12: Okay folks, here is the deal. FOOOD and I are in totally different time zones. When I am awake, he is asleep (and vice versa). This makes turn-around time on 'suggestions/receiving new files' a bit long sometimes.

We are adding a few more cool things at the last minute, so I think everyone will be quite happy with it.

Thanks again for all of the comments...I know you folks want to play with it and we are trying our best to get it out.

Regards.

UPDATE #13: As this patch has progressed, we have continuously identified areas we could improve/expand upon. Although we are open to additional tweaking in the future, we want this to be as complete as possible right out the door. The enthusiasm in this thread has been (and currently is) great to see and is most definitely a motivation to make you folks as happy as possible with the finished 'product'.

Instead of a rush job, we want to make sure we implement the highest quality artwork in all areas of WinRAR. As FOOOD mentioned, time sometimes becomes a constraint. While this project has taken longer than originally anticipated, its scope of coverage has also increased over what was originally planned. Let it be known that we are working to the best of our ability to make this happen as soon as we can, with the highest quality possible. pUPDATE #14: As FOOOD mentioned, additions to the patch are complete. All that remains is writing/organizing the copyright text, completing the Readme, and compiling together the patcher executable. We are in th;)homestretch ;). reUPDATE #15: Greetings folks. The complete download package has been sent off to FOOOD for his final approval and posting. It weighs in at 3.82 MB, which includes several file type icons created by FOOOD, documentation, and, of course:Dthe patches :D. Hold tight..ldUPDATE #16: Announcing the release of the WinRAR 3.40 GUI Patch v1.0 (English only at this time)!

haaa.. I got mine winrar v3.42 with Foood's icons!

I use rehack v3.40 to replace those bitmaps and icons. However the icon size does not match, it displays "cut" of foood's icons.

By comparing some GUI and non-GUI in binary form, I mannually edit the exe file and changed a few corresponding byte's values, surprisingly it works!

However, I've not fully test on the stability of the modified exe. The most importanting is I will not depends on the long wait, "good feature" included new patch anymore. I can do it myself for my own use! :D

Haha.. good work.. Someone figured it out the way I did.. After you tried, easy wasnt it?

Excuse the ignorance, but why is this taking so long? 3.42 is out and there still isn't even a patch for 3.41 yet!

585241834[/snapback]

As you seen above.. it has been done by others (including myself) for some time. None of has have an OK to publicly give it out.. We, athleast I am, are waiting for that.

Yeah, I know about doing it myself with ResHacker and all. I could've done that long back, but I couldn't really be bothered and thus I'm still using 3.40 with the official patch.

I'm just curious as to why it's taking so long.

Yeah.. I figured as much.. I have given up on waiting for a official new version.. I am only waiting on FOOOD's OK to use his icons and I will release the ones I updated if needs be. I would just take a resource editor and a hex editor and have at it till we get any news. :D

Have you tried emails or PM's? :o

Theyve been on the board recently but havent posted in this thread,

I'm thinking of posting mine with or without permission. I'll wait a little longer though.

Might try an email or PM before I post so no-one can say I didnt try

Mike got yelled at by foood for doing that. Go back about 3-5 pages

F#@k it then...Theyve obviously got no interest in the project anymore.

I dont care if he yells(caps) at me:sleep: ...hes only a icon creator, not me dad or god almighty ;) .

Gonna go post mine elsewhere incase he accuses me of theft or something similar.Couldnt care less anyway, but it probably infinges a little on the rule side of things where Neowin is concerned...

Thanks for the heads-up

pffft...you would not believe how easy it is to patch this thing...I couldnt believe it, all you do is change 4 numbers in hex editor and BAM! done. serioualy, at first, I thought it was gonna be hard, but then I got winrar3.40 from rarlabs and decided I was gonna figure it out, so this is what I did.

1. download winrar 3.40 from rarlabs (right click on 3.42 download, copy shortcut, change the 2 to a 0 and get it that way)

2. doubleclick on the installer (it needs to be downloaded to pc)

2. install, but deselect "Integrate WinRAR into shell" - that way you dont have to restart, like the instructions tell you to...make sure you deselect it before continuing, if you continue without catching it, you will have to restart

3. apply the patch 6448 to winrar

4. open wrar340.exe in winrar (this is the downloaded file from rarlabs)

5. extract winrar.exe to some dir so youll know where its at.

6. open both in a seperate resource hacker window (so youll have 2 windows to switch between)

7. goto Bitmap, right click on it and "Save Bitmap resources"...choose a location

8. goto Icon Group, right click "Save Icon Group reources"...choose a location

9. goto Dialog -> ABOUTRARDLG and copy the entire thing and paste in a notepad window...youll need this later

10. Now goto the "non patched" winrar resource hacker window

11. Update the bitmaps with the bitmaps you extracted from the patched version...please make note that they go in order 1,2,3 not 1,10,11.

12. Do the same with Icon Group

13. Now goto Dialog -> ABOUTRARDLG and paste the text from the notepad window overwriting everything here...(make sure it looks the same as the patched version

14. save un patched file...exit out of the patched window (no need to save it since no changes were made)

15. rename un patched winrar to winrara.exe (or whatever, just make sure its different than the patched filename)

16. open both in a hex editor and do a "compare"...if you find more than 4 things different between the 2, you have done something wrong and should start over. (make sure you replace the resources correctly)...then youre done.

I know it seems like a lot, but once you do this, you cant imagine how easy it will be to find on other versions until they finally incorporate it. And just for those people that may have a problem with me posting this, I dont think I am doing anything wrong because anyone could do this...I only did this so I could use a whole different icon theme for my winrar...nothing against FOOOD but his icons arent for me...so now that I have figured out what to change and how to find it, I took a non-patched winrar 3.42 and am working on that. I do suggest if you are gonna look at releasing your version with FOOODs icons that you get his permission, though I really dunno whatll happen if you dont since a group has been rapidly releasing them.

And if youre real smart you can figure out how to go beyond 64x64 and 48x48...I just did a little test and made winrar accept 128x128 for large and 64x64 for small...whooooo.

Hey evilvoice.. way to go.. :woot: You did exactly what I did to figure it out..

Hey, you evil voice I talked to a long time ago in the 911cd forum?

@Harsh!

Yeah.. we cant post it here without OK's.. the rules would give FOOOD and others the option to ask for the removal of the links. And he has still not been online since the 27th.. I give up too. I am not visiting this thread again till I get a PM from someone with news. Anyone need to ask anything regarding this, PM me.. Cause this thread is dead to me..

I am the one and only evilvoice bilemke (do you remember my pm when I said we talked on 911cd?) yes, im the same...honestly, lets see if I can make this ever so easy for people...

open winrar.exe in a hexeditor and search for binary: be (hex number for 48) 00 (hex number for 36) and change it to be (hex number for 64) 00 (hex number for 64)...then near the same place, youll see a be (hex number for 24) 00 (hex number for 24) and replace that with be (hex number for 48) 00 (hex number for 48)...an easy way to figure out the hex value of a decimal number is to open windows calculator and switch to scientific and type 48 in decimal, then click on the hex radial button, itll change it for you...then all you have to do is do the same with 36 and 24 and youre set.

This is very unfortunate. I just wish we could get a clear cut answer if SentientPC is still going ahead with the project or if somone else should take it over.

As to the use of Foood's icons; I love them and would realy like to see them being kept.

@Foood, as it seems that SentientPC is active here and is just not answering, can you please try and get ahold of him so that we can get some clarity on this matter.

Well, it's still good to see that they're still around at least. And if their PM boxes are full, I'm sure it's because of us and this. I say just try having some patience. They know we're still interested in this. People have lives offline outside of the internet and computers. They're probably just very busy in the real world. Good things come to those who wait. They've updated it before, I'm sure they'll continue updating it some more again. :)

    • RevPDF 4.5.0 by Razvan Serea RevPDF is a free, fully offline PDF editor for Windows, macOS, and Linux that lets you edit text and images directly inside PDF files — no internet connection, no account, and no cloud uploads required. Unlike bloated alternatives that demand subscriptions and constant connectivity, RevPDF fits in under 60MB on desktop while delivering a complete editing toolkit: annotate, redact, sign, compress, split, merge, convert, and reorganize pages, all processed locally on your device. Smart font matching ensures edited text blends seamlessly with the original, and multi-language support includes RTL scripts such as Arabic and Hebrew. Where most PDF editors force you to choose between features and simplicity, RevPDF manages both. You can build interactive forms from scratch with text fields, checkboxes, and dropdowns, permanently redact sensitive data before sharing, draw freehand on contracts and diagrams, and add custom watermarks — all without a single file leaving your machine. Edit Text and Images Directly Inside PDFs RevPDF supports true inline PDF editing — not just annotation layers on top of a document, but actual modification of existing text and images within the file. A smart font-matching engine identifies the font used in the original document and applies it automatically when you make edits, so changes blend naturally with the surrounding content. You can reposition elements, resize images, and update text across single pages or entire documents. RevPDF 4.5.0 release notes: This is one of the biggest updates to RevPDF yet. A lot of things people have been asking for are finally here. New Features Auto Redaction Permanently redact sensitive text and areas from your PDFs before sharing. Clean, irreversible, and fully offline. Comments, Links & Bookmarks Add comments for review, insert clickable links, and create bookmarks to jump around long documents without scrolling forever. Find & Replace Search across the whole document and replace text in one go. Long overdue. Split Pages Vertically or Horizontally Split any page down the middle, vertically or horizontally. Perfect for scanned books or double-page spreads. New Drawing Tools More tools for freehand drawing and markup, better for annotations, sketches, and detailed notes. Continuous Scrolling in Editor The editor now scrolls continuously through pages instead of jumping between them. Working through long documents is a lot smoother now. PDF Metadata Editor View and edit the metadata stored inside your PDFs, including title, author, subject, and keywords. Better Font Matching Text edits now blend in more naturally by doing a better job of matching the original font. Tabbed PDF Viewer Open multiple PDFs at once in tabs and switch between them without going back to the home screen. Add Links Insert hyperlinks anywhere in your PDF, to external URLs or to other pages within the document. Share & Print Shortcuts Share or print directly from the editing screen, home screen, and viewer. No extra steps. Minor Updates Paste images directly from clipboard into your PDF New image editing tools for more control over images inside documents Bug Fixes Fixed file saving issues on Windows and Linux Everything still works fully offline.
