How come, at 1280x1024, his jpeg is 800kb, while my jpeg @ 3840x1024 maxed quality in photoshop, is only ~400kb?

it depends on the content of the picture, so to say... try saving a desktop with no wallpaper as jpeg, and it'll be around 10 kB, while a desktop with a colorful wallpaper such as his will take up much more.. however, 800 kB for a 1000x800 image is still too much (we are dealing with desktop screenshots, not desktop publishing, after all)..

what i would like to know more is why so many people use PNG..

Posted my wives desktop, now here is my second of three. Dual monitor setup. Windows XP Pro SP2 but notice the "Manage My Server" from Windows 2003? :whistle:

Very minimal. I try and get my desktop all cool and complicated looking like some of you out there, but in the end, I just end up back with an empty desktop.

I actually didn't have the icons up until recently but got annoyed with having to go to the start menu all the time.

Maybe this is something for you, you can create Shortcuts / Folders without the text and with your own Icons.
