For the sake of avoiding a huge long drawn out decision, we'll go with "i was bored one day, my friend wanted to do my whole hand but I didn't want it so we comprimised to do one finger and I chose to highlight the middle finger since its um the middle finger and it looks best in the middle of the hand"

I know what you are talking about. A joke can be taken the wrong way when the reader can't see facial expressions, tone of voice etc. I try not to judge, but even I miss humour that I know the senders rightfully know is funny.
