Best Linux OS?

Recommended Posts

I believe that everyone is referring to this thread:

https://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=152954

It is sort of a mix of "what do you use?" and "what is the best?" all rolled up into one. ;)

Can someone tell me the best Linux OS out there? Theres suse, ferdora, etc ...Thanks.

***Also, Can it not be hard to install cause im gonna start a new thread later when im installing it : ***

If there was one linux distro that was head and shoulders above the rest, do you think we'd still get this question asked quite so much? We'd all be using the same distro, and all the threads in this section of neowin would be about that distro. The very fact that we all use different distros and that this question gets asked at least twice a week indicates that the range of choices available may all be the right one for you, it just depends on what you need and what you enjoy working with.

The best thing to do is just grab the first one that takes your fancy and play with it. When you learn what you like and dislike about it, then you can do some research into which other distro has more of what you like and less of what you don't like.

Linux Mandrake is best for new beginners in Linux, with no doubth.

If you are used to Win 2000 or xp from before then Linux Mandrake 10 is a GOOD Choice!

The installaton is easy, a nice good KDE board.

And a wery similar "START" menu is integrated in the system.

Good Luck!

Start with a live CD -- Slax is great, Knoppix is also good but a larger download. The benefits of a live cd are:

a.) smaller download

b.) you can't POSSIBLY mess it up if you do something wrong

c.) you CAN install them to HD (difficult, but there's documentation EVERYWHERE on how to do it).

Barring LiveCD distros, go with something easy like Yoper or Ark. Go with Mandrake if you want to download the 3 ISO's and have every piece of current mainstream software for Linux.

Good luck. You'll find Linux is a nice change.

    • My son is in Monaco right now, and I was checking his location in Apple's Find My app. I noticed that Prince Albert's Palace was blurred out on the satellite imagery in both Find My and Apple Maps. I checked Google Maps, and the palace wasn't blurred there. Does Apple have some kind of process where property owners can request that their homes be blurred on Apple Maps?
    • No, it was THAT ugly and I’d rather forget it completely existed.
    • There is a lot of reasons not to use Edge but faster fixes and security updates is not one of them.
    • Can't reproduce. I installed Edge, went to neowin.net > accepted the cookie consent > used menu to go to forums, everything loads and I can browse around the forums. If you can't interact with the dialog on the forums for some reason, go to the main site and accept the cookie consent there? It is true that the site will not function properly until the cookie consent is accepted or rejected,. it's a legal requirement and I also know that certain VPN/ad blockers block it, which is a user related issue and not a neowin.net problem.   This is not our cookie consent dialog. Gotta love browser hijacking... /s Edit: this may be what Californians see, I will confirm with our consent provider.
