programming newbie looking for advice

hi all

had my very first day programming today at college and up until that point id never done any programming in my life . We are starting off doing visual basic and i was wondering would ms visual basic.net standard 2003 be as good as if i had visual basic 6 ? ive tried looking for visual basic 6 but cant find it in any uk stores and the copys i have found r quite expensive :/ does anyone know of places that do discount for students in the uk ? anyway any help/advice be appreciated

vb.net and vb 6 are almost different languages, so you will need vb6 to do your work. You college should be supplying you with some software/compiler for you to do you work in. if not, others around your collage should have a copy.

(not that I encourage piracy or anything......)

Visual Basic 6 came out, then Visual Basic .NET 2002 (which uses the .NET 1.0 framework), then Visual Basic .NET 2003 (which uses the .NET 1.1 framework).

Visual Basic .NET 2003 is the most modern version of Visual Basic right now, but it's so different from Visual Basic 6 that you should get the one your class uses.

As for getting Visual Basic 6, in my experience some books come with an academic version and the books are only $25 (USD). That's one of the few ways to get your hands on it.

You may also want to try searching eBay.
