DirectX not installing...

Recommended Posts

I am running Windows XP Pro and have DirectX 9.0b installed and I've just got the Sims 2 and I need 9.0c.

Whenever I run the sims 2 (and the new bodyshop that came with it) the following message appears:

Failed to initialize Direct3D. Please make sure DirectX 9.0c has been installed on this system. The application will now terminate.

I've TRIED to install 9.0c and according to my computer it has installed, and that it's ready for use but when i go to dxdiag it says I'm still running 9.0b

I am using a Raedon 7000 series for a display card and had downloaded the latest version from the website - http://www.ati.com

what am I doing wrong?!

how can i tell if i'm running service pack 2?

well, i tried installing it earlier on (SP2) and it said that it could not install due to the fact that service pack 2 is not letting it.

so i'm guessing i have sp2 already.

START > RUN > type winver

That'll tell you if you're have SP2.

Here is the websetup of DirectX 9.0c the other guy spoke of:

GAH!

ok, i AM using Service Pack 2

and i STILL don't have 9.0c

what's up with THAT?!

Hmm...i think you have to be. SP2 installs DX9.0c

START > RUN > dxdiag

Try reinstalling your video card drivers too.

Ok, after you download that, you have to run it. It will take a couple minutes to install.

it didn't take a couple minutes at all!

it just skipped the whole loading thing an just told me that the installed components were ready for use. it's INCREDIBLY BAFFLING

Try uninstalling DirectX then re-installing.

geh. I did, i uninstalled, now i don't have directx at ALL.

This is what my installing thing looks like, below:

as you can see, it completely skips the bit where it's supposed to actually LOAD the stuff onto my comp.

Hi,

If you re-install windows xp sp2 again (it'll only take a couple of minutes) you will have DirectX 9.0c again. The reason I beleive this is happening to you is that you used the DirectX 9.0c beta before sp2 came out. I had the same problem and it has fixed mine however sims 2 will still not recognise the fact that DirectX 9.0c has been installed.

I tried all of the above troubleshooters with the same results as yourself.

Damn those betas can really cause headaches but hey we all like the new stuff don't we? :D

Resolved! I now have finished fixing this problem! Sims 2 works too!

Remove Sims 2 first then remove SP2. Apply new DirectX 9.0c then add SP2 and then run the setup for Sims 2 again.

I know it's a long winded way of solving the problem but it definitely works.

I am now able to play this game without the DirectX problem occuring anymore.

:D

And your opinion of the game? :D

that would be because DX9.0c is already installed automaticlly with windows xp sp2 to tell if you have it look in system properties in the general tab it will say "windows xp [home/pro] version 2002 service pack 2"

why oh why would you need to remove SP2? DirectX 9.0c is INCLUDED with windows xp sp2 by default, you have no choice in picking if you want it installed or not, it will install during the installation of SP2

You know what? Maybe M$ won't allow bootleg copies of XP to install/update directx anymore. I have the same problem, I want to play the sims 2, (why is everyone upgrading to C? THE SIMS 2) .. I just reformatted and re-installed today. Noooooooooooope. Maybe I'll just have to go back to SP1 or get the final release of SP2.

[GLOW=blue]Listen every body.............my friend was having the same problem in his pc:

P 4 2.8GHz

256 DDR (2*128)

RADEON 9200====>128

Intel motherboar=>845 familly

built in sound

i tried every what in this page.

THE SOLUTION: Remove one RAM of yours, then install any version you want of DIRECTX, then put the RAM you move again.

i dont know the reason untill now but it works and i am sure that it will with you.

This is the probably most asked question about Sims 2.

For every occasion I've seen of this problem it is easily fixed by removing any forced refresh rate programes. This also means setting their values back to default. So if you have used like RefreshForce and deletd it, download it again, put all the values to default again, and run Sims 2. Forced refresh rates causes that error message.
