3 key's pressed together = beep

Recommended Posts

hi,

i recently got a new mobo and keyboard and on the keyboard i can't press and hold UP, LEFT & CTRL for longer then a second without my PC Speaker beeping, it seems to happen on 95% of key combinations, e.g. in a FPS i can't press W, D & E together becaquse it beeps

is it purly the keyboard ?

is there some option in the bios to fix it ?

mobo is a MSI K8N Plat nforce 3 (amd 64bit)

its a standard PS/2 keyboard, not a main brand though

p.s. (referring to a previous topic of mine which noone replied to) is there a program or somthing to reserve/flip the output of your speakers ?

ok i'll be alittle clearer,

it not the noise thats causing the problems its when the 3 keys are pressed it locks the keyboard and no keypresses go through untill those keys are released, hence why in a FPS i can't run diaganolly and jump.

can you elaborate more on the keyboard scan rate such as how to change it ?

bah same as me but i cant walk diagnly (only one way tho  )

"what kind of keyboard?"

its just a standard PS/2 keyboard from an Advent computer.

installed in windows as Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard

"my pc does the same thing, i think its called 'sticky keys' or something -- and im pretty sure theres a way to turn it off but i dont know off the top of my head"

nah i don't think it is sticky keys, have made sure thats all disabled (in Accessibility Options)

Cheap keyboards beep on 3. My Logitech Internet Keyboard that connects through USB doesn't beep. I could probaly press 20 keys if i wanted to.

You could press 20 keys and have it not beep, but it doesn't mean that all 20 keys are processed. Try it in notepad. Hold a key down one at a time. If it stops changing, switch to another key. I got to 6 before the "letter/number" keys stopped responding. (That is, I had 6 keys pressed down at the same time, and the sixth key was repeating. If I pressed another key, the sixth key would still be repeating.)

hmm it seems to depend on what keys are pressed

can hold down 7 along the middle row A to J b4 it stops/beeps

but can only hold 2 in top row + 1 from middle row (W,E,D)

can't hold down UP, LEFT, RIGHT arrows

but can hold LEFT, RIGHT, DOWN arrows

sooo confusing....

Disable your "sticky keys" setting and everything will be cool, Also if you keyboard requires drivers (most don't but some do) then try the manufacture website for updates. Also look in your bios for "system sounds/notifications" and u should be able to disable the onboard system speaker (Y) good luck.

If ive done my homework and rember correctly the textbook answer for this is the keyboard controller on a ps/2 keyboard (what sends the signals to the machineas for what keys are being pressed only allows for about 3-5 keys to be pressed at one time any more keys pressed than that it beeps to alert you that any more consecutive keys are not going to recive activity on your computer for you pressing them (IE its going to seem like your not pressing them at all to the computer) newer and more mainbrand ps/2 keyboards may not be affected by this problem but most every cheap and the old keyboards are affected.

On the other hand if i remember right usb keyboard controllers allow for an infinate (as many as possible/ or all the keys on the board) to be pressed at once and will accept all their input at one time so pressing all the keys would give you input from all the keys at one constant session. This is because (correct me if im wrong) that the usb keybaords are made this way to take advantage of the extra bandwith that usb offers over ps/2

i think thats close to right

The keyboard controller does not have enough memory to processes your request so it tells the computer to beep telling you that it cant do it. Alot of logitech keyboards do this as do cheap 10$ keyboards. Most if not all Microsoft keyboards do not do this.

There that tells you why. It is your keyboard.

    • Yes for me, I installed 'old calculator' (Windows 7 calculator) in its place since it is more useful to me. I think paint is the only one I left installed
