"Sort by size" question! Advice please!

Recommended Posts

OK, when you tell Windows to sort by size, it lists the folders alphabetically and then the files by size. Is there a way to sort everything, both files and folders, by size? For example, I want it to be:

"File A" (100Mb)

"Folder B" (90Mb)

"File C" (60Mb)

"File D" (45Mb)

"Folder E" (40Mb)

You understand?

If anybody knows how to do this, either with Windows or with a freeware program, I'd be most appreciative. Thanks!

I've searched extensively for a NON-3rd party solution to this and the short answer is "no luck." The forums over at annoyances.org were helpful, though, and suggested that there were some third party apps/shell replacements that would allow you to do this. Essentially, the "size" attribute is attached to files only and Windows won't sort by multiple attributes. That seems silly to me, but nevertheless...

However, there is this .dll that you can install [Thank You to Mark Dormer!] that will allow you to add a "Folder Size" attribute to your 'Details View':

That's somewhat helpful, but doesn't quite solve your problem, I know. Perhaps some other Neowinians have some better suggestions - that's just what I've found so far.

I did want to mention Powerdesk as an Explorer replacement I found that will allow you to do this.
