Did I damage my card with overclocking?

Recommended Posts

Getting really crappy again...

I need a new card FAST!

Which one would you suggest? I don't have much money so keep that in mind, and I would like a card that's directx 9.0 compatible. I guess the 9600s are, aren't they?

9200 256MB (128bit memory interface + the cheapest one :p )

9600 256MB (128bit memory interface)

9600se 128MB (64bit memory interface, but cheap)

FX5600XT

FX5600Ultra

! FX5500 (EXTREME CHEAP, but does this support 9.0, and is it slow?)

Thanks for the QUICK replies!

9600 1st choice, 5900Ultra second choice. But I'd get the 5900Ultra over the rest.

I wrote only 5600Ultra.

I'm really starting to "get in closer relationship" with the FX5500. It's half the prize of the 9600...

And it's 128MB, 128bit memory interface, supports 9.0...

What do you think?

9600 (Y)

sorry about the mistype..5600 LOL

  • 2 weeks later...

Ok, so I tried to RMA my bad card (the 9250) but I couldn't because the people from whom I buyed the card said that I removed the warranty block from the card, and they can't do anything about it.

So, I'm stuck with this bad card. (I'm too lazy to write down what's wrong with it, just see the pics in this thread)

Because I have now buyed a 9600 card too, I can "play" with this card... maybe I can fix it somehow too... with a hammer for example.

But seriously, what do you think is wrong with it, and how can I fix it?

I know there's not a big chance for this, but it's worth a try, rather than throw it directly into the dustbin.

I will try to flash a different BIOS in it... don't know which one though...

I guess that one of it's memory is at fault, so I would need a special BIOS to disable that one memory... anyone willing to write me one, please?

Or maybe I could just remove it physically... 4/1 chance that I will pull out the bad one.

And 100% that the card will not work anymore.

 Hmm... so what do you think? What should I do with it?

you voided the warranty by overclocking it, suck it up and buy a new card. I overclock too, but if I damage something, I'll buy a new one (even though I'm flat broke). RMAing everything you break by your own actions is horrible. The companies you return the crap to have to pay for the stuff themselves, and it deals huge financial blows to them. Most computer stores just make enough to get by, and with all thesee people RMAing everything and then have the companies say "this has been overclocked, we're not responsible" is devastating.

584623160[/snapback]

how do u know it was because he overclocked that it broke on him??

I don't think ati would do anything else than sending it back, because I removed the cooling from the card once, but I didn't found the screws that you just only need to push into the card, because they have rolled away, so I screwed normal screws into the card.

Maybe I should have searched a little more instead... :pinch:

But this is not the reason why this card isn't working like it should, because it had these problems before I did that.

Now I'm going to flash a moded BIOS made by my self...

I will be happy, when it doesn't blow up after that right away. :ninja:

ATI will only RMA cards made by them, not cards powered by them. Normally, the manufacturers of these video cards will also not deal with end users since a large amount of them are not as well informed as computer stores. Therefore, it's best to determine what warranty you will have from the store you purchased the card from. That way, you can just return it to them if you have problems. I have RMA'd overclocked video cards before and have had no problems getting a new one. If anything, the manufacturer will test it, determine what the problem is, and fix it. I am sure that they don't have time to bother determining whether a card has been overclocked or not. BTW, I have never heard of a video card that logs the maximum speed it has been set to. If you have some proof of this I would be very interested.

I have strange letters in DOS, so I don't know what the **** is written down when I do something... I only noticed some red lightning characters, when I wanted to flash my own made BIOS, and I was too scared to actually continue. :p

There are allot of setting in this BIOS editor tool.

Allot of memory timing settings, and the size of the ram setting too.

Now, what would happen if I would change the size to 64MB?

I wanted to do that, but I got the error above... should I try it, or not?

Can't wait, can't wait.

Um, that could be part of your problem then

No! The problem was there way before I did that!

It's the same now and before that.

Anyway I managed to do this, after I've tried different types of moded BIOSes.

Hmm... It looked much worser, than you can see now. It's "not" that bad though.

SO let me get this straight, you removed the fan from the card .. AND overclocked it???!!!! LMAO!!!!

Seriously, did you try to re-seat the video card, perhaps reset your CMOS, reflash the bios on the video card, check the connection between video card and monitor? ATI's usually could be overclocked without issue, unless you did something stupid (i.e. remove the fan).

I'm not THAT stupid.

I put the cooling back on before I started the computer again.

Anyway I give up... It only gets worse if I try to edit some BIOS settings, so I restored the default BIOS, removed the card, and put the 9600 in... ahh beautiful images. :D

If no one knows any good tip to fix this card, I'm just gonna put it on my wall.

 -looking at the box of the card- : "...as it was MEANT to be seen"

the thing is that when you send a RMA back to the manufacture the company also

will refurbish the goods. And they do choose what items to refurbuish. Because

if the current product is the "new Stuff on the market" then they will still receive a profit from that item after they have refurbished the item. Otherwise it wouldnt make sense why the company would refurbish the item.

Example Cell phone batteries. The cost of Say verizon to Fix and Ship the battery that isnt holding its power is more expensive then to just give the customer a new battery and keep them happy.
