manually update directx?

Recommended Posts

Yo, im on sp2 rc2 build 2126 and whilst everything runs super good I cannot run the sims 2 because it says could not detect direct3d.

now rc2 comes with 9.0c installed but I do believe that it is an older build than the final. I have tried to install the redist but it just says the installation is complete right after I click "next" in the installer and does not update direct x.

I wondered if there is a way of updating the directx files manually or any single file that may be needed.

here is my dxdag screenshot

(i have also tried direct x eradicator to go back to 8.1 but even after going to 8.1 9.0c redist wont install in the same way so i restored back to sp2's 9.0c.

Uninstall the beta SP2 and install the final one. Then install WMP10 if you had a beta version of WMP10 installed. WMP10 includes "new" versions of some DX files that DX will consider "old" versions because they're not final (such as that qasf.dll file).

i cant reallt uinstall sp2 because when i go to do so the list of programs that may no longer work and everything is way too large to risk it.

if installing sp2 final is the case the ill just wait til i get a dvd writer so i can burn off important data :/

Don't worry, nothing will be broken. It's just saying that if any of the programs installed after SP2 require SP2, they won't work until you reinstall it. If you install the final build before using any of those apps, you will be fine. Heck, you should be fine anyway, I always was! :p

ok i just went to add/remove to uninstall sp2 rc2 and the link to the uninstall feature for sp2 has gone?!?! wtf!

is there a shortcut or run command to launch the uninstall process by chance?

also is it not like system restore, by this i mean that any progam installed to the system will not be available after uninstall since the system reverts back to how it was prior to sp2 install just like system restore or will the programs remain ?

It would have been so much easier if you could install the final sp2 over any previous build :/

edit*

or, can I boot from the x pro sp1 slipstream cd i made before and choose "repair current windows installation" - would that repair windows keeping all my programs and files but just update windows to the version off the cd and tehn install sp2 final after ?
