Changing the default movie player

What is MiniVLC?

A small media player I made that combines the speed of mplayer-cvs with the nice icons from VLC.

All it does is run 'mplayer $' from the command line when I open a file. On a G3 mplayer is a lot better then VLC for large movie files.

I used to use MplayerOSX2, but its interface and icons looked pretty bad, and I always liked the icons from VLC, so I made this. There isn't a interface (yet) just a movie screen and keyboard shortcuts.

So it really should be called "MiniVLC-esqueMPlayerOSX" since it's not VLC at all!

I like MPlayer can't touch VLC in my opinion, and I have a computer fast enough to run both. It's a good thing you can figure out how to make your own apps though, because I wouldn't have the patience.

Well VLC is also based on ffmpeg, so they are really similer. But your right.

I dont know what makes mplayer so fast, but even on old PCs (less then 450mhz) mplayer will play mpeg4 files better then anything else I have tried.

I made the .app with platypus it is a pretty cool program to make .app packages out of scripts.

Here is the code for it if you are interested, it is just a modified version of a script inclded with platypus.

#!/usr/bin/perl

$cnt = 0;

# loop through list of files dropped
foreach(@ARGV)
{
	if ($cnt != 0) # We ignore the first argument (the app bundle path)
	{
 ?system("/usr/local/bin/mplayer '$_'");
 ?
	}
	$cnt++;
}

This player is good for almost everything I watch, but I still have 5 other media players which is anoying.

VLC - plays some things that mplayer wont

QuickTime - Plays .mov files in webpages

RealPlayer - not to bad of a program anymore, but it is quicktime with a new interface. I rarly use it, it needs more features like playlist support.

WMP - Plays WMA/V files, I rarly use it.

DVD Player - I use it for DVDs, the interface is nice. mplayer/VLC will also play DVDs, but I use this for smoother playback.

    • UK to ban under-16s from social media following a six-week trial with teenagers by Paul Hill Credit: Pexels A few months ago, Neowin reported that the UK was trialing a social media ban with 300 teenagers for six weeks, that testing has come to an end, and Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced that the country will ban under-16s from social media. Starmer said that this technology is making children unhappy and making it easier for bullies to harass and abuse them. He continued to talk about the addictive nature of social media, saying that it uses an infinite scroll designed to lock users in for hours. He said this interferes with children doing their homework, reading, playing with friends outside, and going to bed on time. Tackling the idea that nothing can be done about social media, Starmer said: The government’s action won’t stop at social media either, the PM said. It plans to take action on gaming services and livestreaming platforms. Right now, he said, strangers can contact any child unchecked. He said this wouldn’t happen in real life, and the government is going to stop it from happening online, too. The Labour government has overseen the introduction of the Online Safety Act, a big change to the internet which includes age verification on adult websites. This has led to a fair bit of backlash, but overall, the government is pushing ahead with these changes.

    • I'll wait for the root cause analysis. Looks like it's HP, Lenova, and certain configurations that are askew, hardly "all of windows." Time will tell.
