I'm currently taking an Information Systems Security Specialist Course (ISSS+) and I decided to try to experiment with ISA before the actual module that taught it comes up. So tonight using trial versions of Server 2000 and ISA Server 2004, I tried to get an ISA box up and running.

After ISA was installed the DHCP stopped giving out IP Addresses on the network, yet from the DHCP snap in everything looked ok. I talked to someone who is fairly experienced with ISA and he told me that Active Directory and ISA don't seem to get a long to well and that they shouldn't be installed on the same server.

So my question is this.

At home I have 3 computers. 2 Machines running Windows XP and 1 Machine running a new fresh copy of 2000 Server. (Formated after nothing seemed to be working with the last attempt)

Do I need a DNS/DHCP server in order for ISA to work correctly, meaning do I need to physically have 2 seperate server computers in order to run an ISA server? Or can I simply install ISA without installing Active Directory (dcpromo) on the single server.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

hello there,

I use Windows Server 2003 and ISA Server 2000. if you are only have 1 server then it's adviseable NOT to install DHCP and DNS on it and stick with static IP's for the internal computers and internal interface of the server.

Any other questions feel free to PM me or post here :)
