Ktpano, any luck with this? LIke you, I have spent months trying to find a solution to get rid of those useless and annoying popup windows. I have tried all of the "solutions" mentioned in the thread as well but none of them work to get rid of the main popup windows. I'd like to know what moron programmer came up with such a stupid feature, and especially why he made a decision to make it so it could not be turned off.

Why there is not a delay built in to the hover I'll never know. This one of the most annoying features of windows, those useless boxes are always in the way and I am surprised more people have not complained about them. The ones in the taskbar are especially annoying as some of the boxes are several inches long, covering up all of the other boxes! Again, moron programming at its best.

Items in the start menu.. on your desktop etc. Right click > Properties > Delete everything in the Comment box. Bingo! No more tooltip.. have fun doing that for every one that offends your eyes.

Blame all the stupid people who don't automatically know what everything is on their computer at any given time. Tooltips can sometimes be useful to most people - granted, their implementation sucks. A better idea would be to have an activation key, which when pressed, illuminates all tooltips within a certain radius of the mouse.

I'll agree that they can sometime be handy, it's just to bad the programmer was not smart enough to allow them to be turned off or as you say activated differently. Even a delay would be nice. I get so aggravated by these boxes it's hard to concentrate on the pages I am viewing. I use the taskbar a lot, usually have 5-10 programs open so I am always moving my mouse there to open one. ANd of course everytime I do a long-ass window box pops up that covers all of the other icons. Moronic programming at its best.

I am surprised that this doesn't bother tons of people, it can't just be me. These stupid boxes pop-up every where I go, I cannot believe that there is not a reg hack for this, something somewhere has to tell these stupid boxes to appear!

Anyway to awnser the mate who asked me if i managed to fix this sh!t annoyance, the awnser is NO.

To be sincere i gave it up.

Seems some features of windows cannot be disable.

And this one is the worst i've seen.

1) Copy explorer.exe from your windows folder to your desktop, rename to explorer2.exe

2) Open explorer2.exe with Resource Hacker

3) The hover text "Click here to begin" can be found here: String Table/34/1033/line 533

4) Remove the text, leaving just the quote marks: ""

5) Click on the "Recompile" button and then save the file

6) Restart your computer in Safe Mode (hit F8 on startup)

7) Copy explorer2.exe into the Windows folder

8) Rename explorer.exe to explorer.old, and then rename explorer2.exe to explorer.exe

9) Restart your computer and you'll find that this tooltip will no longer appear.

BTW... you can also change the text of the Start button if you like, you'll find it here: String Table/37/1033/line 578

I assume the above methods *only* eliminate the hover box for "Click Here To Begin"? That one is really not a bother as it is a small box. My main gribe are the ones in the taskbar as the pop-up boxes can be several inches long which means they cover up most or all of the other icons to the right.

The only consistent solution I've seen for that is AlphaXP, which allows you to set the transparency of all tooltips (among other things). It's a shareware program (only $14.95)... I installed the 7-day trial on a virtual XP Pro machine and found that it works quite well.

THANKS!!! That is a GREAT program and the BEST solution so far!! It eliminates them altogether on the taskbar and for other areas there is just a very quick flash. MUCH much better!!!

Hahahaha you call me a moron and you seem to be angry at the very feature that will help you!

If you have lots of open windows and hence the tab on the taskbar is too small to contain the name so you know what it is.. then the bloomin' tooltip tells you!!!! That is what it is there for!!

And like I said the distracting argument is BS because unless you are hovering over them all the time (negating your above problem) then you won't be seeing them will you.

This problem really used to annoy me, they was doing an online talk with the person responsible for heading the team of programmers and stuff at Microsoft who designed the windows GUI, I asked him if they could be removed and he said he had never actually been asked that question before. It was meant to be added to a list of problems customers wanted to see solved, that was in March of this year.

I have been looking into turning off the tooltips for the taskbar as well and found no joy like you it gets in the way all the time especially when a lot of programs and folders open.

Also with skinning you need to see how your work looks and the tooltip is just insanely irritating. :angry:

I think I'll just get a mac rather :p

PS. to all the people who say baloontips = tooltips catch a wake up.

Sorry to bump but... after years of search... this is the unique and best way to deal with windows tooltips i could ever find. Just registered to say thanks. Awesome! Plus... AlphaXP is freeware now..! Thank you very much Monkeys4me for sharing your knowledge.
