XP-SP2 general house cleaning

This is probably a stupid question, but does anyone have a simple way or program that will efficiently clean all the junk that accumulates in the background on a computer.

With a Mac you can use Conflict catcher as a good start.

I see many registry cleaners, but have found in the past that if you run 2 or more in sequence thay all find different problems, so that evenutally your computer could be erased (joke).

Any ideas will be appreciated.
