[Linux/ Unix/ Freebsd/ MacOS] lets talk *nix

Recommended Posts

I am 26 Male fulltime professional as linux admin/ It consultant / LAMP developer. going to give SuSe/Novell and RHCE exams in coming months and soon will develop my own distro.

for a period of 3-4 years, I was vb / asp/ access/ sql developer and windows guy.. (MCSE papers attempted)but people in this feild are like dirt here in india.. so i wanted to do something in IT which is not done by any joe admin.

Then 2 years ago, I started doing linux and things.

now i am complete server admin (still lots to learn ) and want to make my own distro soon (this is like a phase u get when u keep using linux and realise u can make your own distro).

till now i have tried

just tested/installed :- trying too see if i can use it as desktop.

suse, gentoo 2004.1(this was fun.. but too much), damn small linux, puppy linux , feather linux, knoppix, gnoppix, xandros, libranet, lindows, linspire (almost killed my inner child) , slax livecd (amazingly small simple fast usable a winner).

extensively used :- to test installation of web/file/domain/email/firewall/dhcp/email server with antivirus/spamassasin protection and ids systems

fedora core 2, mandrake, centos 3.3, whitebox linux, yellowdog, slackware.

almost mastered :- complete server management.

Redhat 7.3- 9, fedora core 1.

now i want to try some very important distros which i havent even tried like debain, freebsd, mac osx, also will be downloading soon ubantu or is it ubuntu , arklinux and give them a spin.

I want all you guys (and gals if there are ) to tell what do u want in your ideal linux distro. lets factor it in section like.

X = kde. gnome, xfce, fluxbox, blackbox.

messenger = gaim, kopete

browsers = opera , firefox, konquerer

favourite tools like vnc, putty, ntpass changer, qtpart, and shud be lots of others....

looking for some good posts.

My ideal linux distro has every open source app available to it. It installs just the bare minimum to get a bash shell up and running by default, and it uses a high-performance kernel patchset as a default, such as mm, ck, love, nitro, etc etc. The ISO would be as small as possible (only including enough to get the bash shell up, as per the default install). It should use NPTL, a decent scheduler, and reiser4, and its package manager should gracefully handle both source and binary packages.

It would provide free security updates to a list of officially supported specific apps (basics like firefox, apache, BIND, [my|posgre]SQL, etc etc).

It should also do my laundry, washing up and shopping, and create instant world peace.

Rather than an ideal distro, I think that the current distros could use a bit more apps to help people (Windows users, and other *nix neophytes) jump in a bit easier.

Things to do a GUI config of iptables would help a lot of people. Including the nVidia, ATI, Flash, and other modules and apps would make things work more seamlessly.

These things are already here, and can be found (some include by default), but it seems like most of these "easy" versions of Linux are too locked-up (Linspire, Xandros, etc.) and not as open and free as Linux should be.

Please, please, please Use Ubuntu! And pick up a few good pointers

X =Gnome 2.8 no less, XFCE4

Messenger = GAIM

Browsers = Firefox, Opera (maybe, just as an alternative)

Packages: .deb, using APT-GET + SYNAPTIC. Packages optimized and customized for different machines i686, i386 etc.

Multimedia: MPlayer (HAS TO BE INCLUDED), XMMS

Openoffice.org

Few good games, such as Tuxracer, Frozen Bubble.

Also good tweaking programs, such as a GUI for something to edit startup services (the only think Ubuntu is lacking)

That would be my dream Linux Distro, its more or less Ubuntu, but with a few bits added :D

Hope that helps. (Y)

P.S. I Love Ubuntu, sorry for mentioning it so many times. But I have tried various Linux Distros in the past, and nothing has impressed me as much

Gotta give you props for developing LAMP (provided it's the same LAMP web server implementation that I'm thinking of.)

I don't think he actually single-handedly developed Linux, Apache, mySQL and PHP, I just think he does some development work on that platform ;)

lol.. no sir .. i am 27 not 72... i am MCSE and CISCO certified person ( soon going for RHCE TOO ) and i just develop/admin apps/server on LAMP platform.

BTW ATTN: this is not a lame attempt to ressurect a thread . its a serious post.

this reply is a collection thoughts gathered after all this months i have posted this thread. as this topic titles asks, i am gathering wht do computers users really want. its a huge thing to ask and i dont expect a perfect answer. it will be months till i figure out what will be perfect for me to do when finally churning out linux distro.

i havent yet started .. so bear with me :D..

i just saw a poll asking is linux usability matching with XP?

i am like humm.. .depends who the user is .. if its "total newbie to linux" then NO (sometimes yes) and if its revisitor to Linux then YES.. linux is almost matching ( repeat "almost" ) XP usability.

what i think is Linux Developer community is busy porting different apps for same task and not doing a collective effort ( i know as there will be different developers on OSS this is the only way things will happen ) let me explain what i want to say with , with a example case .

a hypothatical scenario:-

lets say on messenger platform different groups start building GAIM, AMSN, KOPETE.. soon GAIM finds popularity and acceptance from user base.

Now i feel some distro shud get all three app developer team, match their codes and get best CODE out of all of the three application and develop a SINGLE SUPER messeneger ( and pay the three teams too , though its open-source and free ).

EVERYBODY wins .. BUT .. THIS DOESNT happens..

all the DISTRO owner does is script-out a bootloader, pull a package manager collect all popular open-source software, compile with name , label and logo in ABOUT and put ISO's to download.

I am making my distro ( still a paper tiger ) and want to check everything out and find a way to include it in my version.

Right now, I am badly waiting for a job-placement ( so i am stable ) so that i dont end up on pavement when my distro is ready for release..

what do you say people?

and i just want to add, MICRSOFT has huge APPLICATION base with refined integration with its operation system (although totally insecure and vulnerable to exploits) FOR ENTERPRISE platform.

Microsoft DESKTOP platform IS getting threatened, but the BACKEND ENTERPRISE MARKET still has depend on lots of applications by Microsoft to run business ( i am not talking about web-hosting and web servers, but REAL CRM, ERP, SAP-LIKE business enviornment ).

LINUX, here has HUGE mountain to climb. and things like GAMBUS http://gambas.sourceforge.net/ , MONO DOT NET http://www.mono-project.com/about/index.html , ECLIPSE http://www.eclipse.org/ MACROMEDIA FLEX http://www.macromedia.com/devnet/flex/ are just starting to happen in the happening world of linux.. BUT still huge mountain to climb and long way to go.

i havent even touched the topic on gaming yet. But there needs something to happen and lot better than what we have right now, that is Knoppix based LiveCD gaming http://tuxgamers.altervista.org/llgp.php?tg_lang=en and cadega http://www.transgaming.com/ .

SO my wish for 2005 is, enough with another DISTRO a day and fight among what is BEST distro among the lot. LETS do some INTEGRATING and refining. I know linux is all about HAVING options but right now all linux has is Nth number of options but no SINGLE KILLER APP type of attitude in it . ( What i mean is .. something like FIREFOX has done or OPERA has done.. just gives 1-2 blow to the BLUE E on your desktop.)

so linux , lets do it.

I wish that there were as many applciation developers as there are distro packagers.  I agree, we do not need another distro, we need more applicationb refinement and completion.  there are way too many half completed apps.

I would like a new system to software installation on linux, without having to compile, apt get and all that stuff it would be nice if you could just double click like windows or drag to application folder like Mac

You mean like Synaptic?

Yoper!

its optimized, yoper core has only a bash shell, it uses apt, but getting portage to work in it is being tested. it uses reiser4. its free,

too bad about the rest though....

mepis does all that, and its open.

the nvidia/ATI things didnt work for me though, but they are there and being improved.

    • This is why competition must exist. Finally, pressure is mounting on Microsoft to move in the right direction.
    • Microsoft is making Windows 11's context menus faster, simpler, and configurable by Taras Buria Five years ago, Windows 11 introduced redesigned context menus, offering users a simpler, more modern design. However, customers quickly discovered that the new menus leave a lot to be desired. Many are unhappy with performance (they are really slow), while others dislike the double-layed design, where many options are hidden behind the "Show more options" button. In addition, over the years, menus became cluttered and overloaded. While Microsoft has already fixed plenty of pain points across Windows 11, context menus remain mostly unchanged. Fortunately, Microsoft is finally listening. Marcus Ash, Design and Research Lead for Windows at Microsoft, responded to a tweet on X, confirming that the company is working on fixing Windows 11's context menus. Reworked context menus are supposed to be faster, simpler by default, and "configurable to what you use most." What the latter means is unknown, just like whether Microsoft plans to keep the classic menu alongside the modern one, but according to Marcus, the wait should finally be over soon, as he promised to "share our approach soon." Improved context menus will most likely appear first in Windows 11 preview builds in the Experimental Channel. While we wait for Microsoft to release them, you can try fixing context menus on your PC with a simple tool called Windows 11 Context Menu Manager. It lets you disable entries you do not need, not only cleaning up context menus, but also making them significantly faster. Microsoft has already improved Windows 11's Start menu and taskbar, so hopefully it will address user criticism of the context menu as well. Stay tuned for new Windows 11 preview builds, which usually arrive every Friday.
