Longest song you know.

The newest Fantomas album is one long song. This is really a stupid question. Long doesn't mean good.

Velvet Underground - Sister Ray has been in my playlist a lot recently. If we could eliminate all this mainstream crap like Weird Al and Chimera, (who produce such.... lovely?.... pieces of art) then we could actually focus on meaningful contributions to the scene. It wouldn't be hard to just go through the avant garde genre and find millions as [ length of song ] is not a variable in their composure.

oh my god! they made a 10 minute long song! thats nuts! what will the label say. come on, give me a break, most of the people who have posted on this thread don't have a clue as to what music really is. i could rant forever about this really. the smart ones know what i mean, everyone else, well they have their fingers on the "flame" buttons already. i'm sorry if i insulted your 'artists' but wise up suckers.

Gotta agree with amERICa on the longest not meaning good part.

Most of the songs stated in this thread are utter crap (but don't take me seriously!)

On a side note... remembering "Shine on you crazy diamond" from Pink Floyd...

It ain't that great, considering that it's about Roger Water having a hard on for Sid Barret for about 5 min....

and the rest of the song is just sound...

but correct me if i'm wrong!

Yep, america, I agree. I remember when I was a kid looking through my dads record collection and seeing 10 minute plus songs on some Skynyrd albums and being impressed...but not...it's just music to me. When I listen to a 12 minute Opeth song I'm not thinking about how it's longer than mainstream crap, I'm thinking of how beautiful their transitions are and really listneing to all the detail in the music, studying the time signature arrangements the drummer is using and just absorbing the beauty of it all.

Dopesmoker is a pretty unique song though, it reall benefits from being as long as it is. It starts out with a droning guitar riff, then around 2:45 into it you get drums, then there is a climatic build-up around 8 minutes into it and you get vocals, and there are all sorts of droning moments, wonderful transitions, build-ups etc that just couldn't be acheived int he same fashion if it were a 20 minute song. It's really an amazing listen.

Back many moons ago when i was a young punk of 25 or so i had a live version of Carlos Santanas " Black magic woman" that scored around 25 minutes; an awesome rendition from an awesome guitarist.

I also have Ottmar Liebert's remake of " Samba Pa Ti" that rolls in around 17 mins with Santana doing a guest riff right towards the end, extremely cool :shifty:

Not sure on this one, but im guessing if you pick any live song, from any Phish type of band, it will probably clock in at 15-20minutes.

/shrug i need short 3 minute pop ditty's to satiate my dulled and shortended MTV/80's generation attention span. If anything clocks in at over 3 minutes i probably fell asleep long before it hit the halfway mark.

To me, techno doesn't count. It isn't difficult to have a keyboard do the work for you for many hours on end. That's my meaningless opinion, though. Now, what bayrider said amazes me! :D The longest songs I know are by Pink Floyd, Santana, and the longest one is by Dream Theater - Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (42:04).

Skynyrd's live version of free bird is around 15 minutes, and I think the Allman brothers have several 20+ minute songs.....
