Installing Linux..

Recommended Posts

hi,

i am planning to install fedora on my computer, but cuz i never done it before i just want to be sure nothing goes wrong.

well i've got 1 harddisk with 2 ntfs-partitions at the moment.. one of 60 one of 100gb.. the 60GB.. has windowsxp on it (C:\) and the D:\ of 100GB has files.. what i want is to make a third partition on one of those 2.. what do you recommend to use?

can i just use partitionmagic to make a partition and then install fedora core on it? what type of partitiontype should it be etc. etc. or can you do all this also in the setup of fedora?

another question is.. how many space do i need for fedora? i know its like 6gb when you install everything.. but does it grow exponential like winxp :p ? i am thinking about 10gb or something

and at last: is it possible to read ntfs files and write to it? (when the permissions are full access everyone)

thanks

Use partition Magic to resize your 100GB "file" partition, to leave you 10GB to play with Fedora. Boot up witht the fedora disk and it'll guide you through everything. It does all the partitioning and formatting for you. You really cant go wrong. Its all handled by a neat GUI.

You should create the partition BEFORE you start installing Fedora. Something like Partition Magic will let you resize your partitions without (usually) corrupting data.

I would also suggest that you let Fedora worry about the formatting, Ive done the above few steps so many times, its never let me down so far.

umm what about the ntfs read/write ability of fedora?

and

what should i choose by create partition in partition magic? ext2, ext3 or doesnt that make sense?

there is also an install another operating system wizard, where you can choose linux and then ext2 or ext3.. it also asks for a linuxswap partition.

:o Don't do that!

Yes, you will need to manually make room (shrink a partition, or remove one). But, don't create anything. Leave it unpartitioned/unallocated.

Correct. You don't want to worry about making the right size swap, or if you want a /boot separate partition - and if so, hwo large?

I think forster was saying exactly what I am here, but the part of creating partition should have been worded to clearly state to MAKE ROOM on your drive, and state to not create an ext (or anyother) partition.

To add NTFS *read* support, you will need to add the right RPM from here:

http://linux-ntfs.sourceforge.net/rpm/

Now, write access is a different matter.

lol.. i've installed it .. no problem.. but i dont get the system yet..

i wanted to install the nvidia drivers but you need to change something from 5 to 3 in etc/inittab .. so i did that.. but how do i change it back now?

the nvidia drivers are still not installed lol.. how difficult could u make it :s

and ntfs dont work either.. but wtf i am on xp now again :) not for me i guess.. i will try it for 2 weeks or something.. and then i see further

hopefully some can help me how to edit that file in console mode :)

Easiest way to do the nVidia drivers is to switch init to 3 directly, rather than editing the file. If the procedure says to edit the file, then it is written more difficultly (is that even a word?) than it should be.

You should just do an /sbin/init 3 to switch to text only mode (kill X), then run the nVidia script, then make sure your xorg conf file calls for the nvidia module specified in their directions. Once that is done, just /sbin/init 5 to switch back to runlevel 5. There is no need to edit the inittab file.

As for NTFS, RedHat/Fedora don't include this kernel feature deliberately (due to patent concerns with Microsoft). This is easily added here:

http://linux-ntfs.sourceforge.net/rpm/fedora3.html

Whenever you feel like trying again, there are LOTS of people here that are happy to help you get set up.

Hmmmm...

I don't know if a 686 will work with your kernel, and just use the compatibility mode, or if it will cause a panic.

There is a link to the sources, and you can compile it for your archetecture. That may be best....
