Upgrade Computer Specs help (im a newbie)

Recommended Posts

I have the following specs:

AMD Duron 1200mhz thunderbird CPU

AMD K7 Mobo

FX5600 256mb GPU AGP 8x

120gb 7200 rpm HD ATA 133

52x CD rom

48x/12x/50x CD rewriter

19" CRT monitor

640mb SD ram

Unsure of Mobo specs and PSU

I want to upgrade:

CPU: to 3.0ghz INTEL P4 800mhz

PSU: Undecided

Mobo: Whatever Fits into it

RAM: 1ghz dual channel DDR

Will this work, if so what mobo will cover all these specs, brands etc. (im completly new at this so know little about compatibility)

Also what PSU brands are good and how much Power is required?

Money is an issue so the cheaper the better

EDIT: found a thermaltake PSU (reading other threads heard these are great) 480W, will this go well with this system? Link

Price is in NZ dollars so is higher than US (exchange rate roughly 0.68 to 1)

get what habtro said. for the ram i think that, the mobo he's speakin of requires ddr2. http://gamedude.com.au/prod_show.php?art_n...Otw_d2_512_4200 <--theres some nice 2x 512 corsair sticks for ya. i would also think about upgrading that vid card while your there. that card is getting out of date real fast.

I think that gfx card is ok.. if hes wondering about bottlenecks then amd 64(s939) instead of intel 3.0 and a abit av8 3rd eye with 1gb pc3200 ram. Then you'll be sorted :D If hes not looking at bottlenecks but everything gfx might be an option if he had the money.. maybe to a 256mb 6800GT??

if you live in the us. go to a microcenter store if there's one around you. The people they hire know what there talking about. Can give advice on upgrading whole computer. What compatible, etc...

a) Brands for what? CPU It really depends on what you plan on doing with your system Gaming go the AMD A little of everything e.g. Gaming, Video Encoding, Multimedia i.e. digital content creation go the Intel. Because, AMDs show better performence in gaming however the difference in gaming between Intel procs and AMDs is not too large and the difference in performence for extreme power hungry appz (what i mentioned above) there is quite a significant difference between the two (intel being the major performer here) If your talking about brands for Mobo, RAM etc. Mobo I would say Asus is the leader (Y) but also I like Gigabyte as that is what I am on now and they are great. RAM depends on what you want to do again... OC'ing extreme stuff go for some quality **** like Corsair etc. or if you want something abit more mainstream just go some Kingston or something.

b) Wattage what do you plan on running? 400 Watt is usually enough for most people though... Also look into getting a good brand say Antec or something (Y) or you can pretty much get any brand here just make sure it isnt anything too cheap. Get something with some reputation behind it something quality and reliable.

c) Works out cheaper if you buy seperatly and build it yourself, also some people like me prefer doing this... If your lazy and dont want to have a risk of ****ing anthing up, get it prebuilt...

:)

edit: woohoo 777 posts :D

Right: I have chosen...

CPU: Intel Pentium 4, 3.0 GHz CPU, 800 Mhz FSB, Prescott Socket 478

Motherbaord: Asus P4P800 Deluxe

PSU: Thermaltake W0011RAC, Silent Purepower 480W ATX PSU

RAM: Kingston Dual Channel Memory Kit, 2x512MB, DDR-SDRAM, DIMM, DDR400

To go with my...

Graphics Card: FX5600 256mb GPU AGP 8x

Hard Drive: Maxtor 120gb 7200 rpm HDD ATA 133

CD Drives: 52x CD rom, 48x/12x/50x CD rewriter

Before i order..WILL THIS WORK  ???

    • iPadOS 26 is now official with improved windowing, menu bar, 'Liquid Glass' redesign, more by Taras Buria As expected, today, at WWDC 2025, Apple announced iOS 26 and other operating systems that now carry the 26 version number (for simplicity). iPadOS is also part of the big redesign, and it is now official with the new Liquid Glass design, improved window controls, a Mac-like menu bar, file management enhancements, and more. In addition to the general Liquid Glass redesign, which is now present across all of Apple's operating systems, iPadOS 26 received several iPad-exclusive upgrades. It now has a reworked windowing system that helps you organize and switch between apps. You can finally place and resize apps exactly how you want. Plus, iPadOS now has familiar window controls: three buttons for closing, minimizing, and resizing your app. Straight from macOS. Apps can now remember their previous size and position, and Expose can show you all open windows. Finally, iPadOS now has a menu bar, which is another thing that comes from macOS. It gives access to common actions, commands, and features. Developers can customize the menu bar in their apps and specify what features are available there. Apple is also upgrading the Files app with a reworked List view, which now shows more details about your files and the ability to expand or collapse folders. Plus, you can customize folders with colors and emojis, pin folders to the dock, and set default apps for file types. When working with long-running processes, background tasks show up as live activities, so that you can track Final Cut exports or the Files app moving stuff around. Other changes in iPadOS 26 include improved audio controls and the ability to select audio input source and record audio with voice isolation. The Journal app is now available on the iPad, Notes received markdown support, and Calculator now supports 3D graphing capabilities. You can learn more about iPadOS 26 in the official announcement post here.
