Roaming Profile users: Clean up temp files auto?

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I have a few roaming profile users on my network. Unfournately, they use Firefox and IE, and a lot of temp files get built up, sometimes their profile gets to 300mb+. Is there a way to clean out the temp files before logging out (and uploading the new profile?)

Thanks,

Roaming profiles don't replicate the "Local Settings" subfolder under docs and settings. This is where temp files are stored, therefore, the profile size (at least the roaming profile) isn't being affected by temporary internet (and likely other) files.

@ahodes1 - Yes they do.

You can set up your roaming profiles to exclude certain directories from synchronization by name.

The GP path to the object is:

User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> System -> Logon/Logoff -> Exclude directories in roaming profile

You do not need to use the full path, only the folder name (i.e. Temporary Internet Files).

Also, do not use quotes (it might work with, but you don't need them), and separate multiple folder names with semicolons.

HTH,

Trajik

Ah, I forgot to mention that this is a feature in the Computer Configuration, not the User Configuration. The path differs, but if you have the latest ADM files, the path is:

Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > User Profiles

Why don't you set up the group policy to delete the roaming profile on log off? Microsoft calls it, 'Delete cached copy of roaming profile'. This way, all the temp folders and everything in the local settings are deleted.

That doesn't purely delete temp files, it deletes the entire profile from the machine you logged in on after you log off. It still synchronizes the entire profile (temp files and all) with the roaming profiles on your "file server."
