root window wallpaper

When i used gnome i always used nautilus' desktop so it would set the background there. Recently i stopped having nautilus load and just have the gnome panels with openbox wm. When i use the gnome utility to set the background it does it fine setting it to the root window, but when i log out and kill x then startx again, the background is lost, and I have to reset it again. Is there anyway to keep the background loading everytime. Ive tried Esetroot and xsetroot and they only seem to want to use bmp files.

Look into the program xsetbg. That should work. Also, I use wmsetbg at school and that works well enough.

ok I guess i have a different problem, there is some layer over the root window becuase when i use xsetbg it sets the wallpaper as the root window but I can't tell because something is covering over it, but it is not the nautilus desktop becuase that isnt running. When i hit ctrl + alt + backspace to kill x i saw the bg for a split second, so something is covering it but i dunno what.
