[Spoilers] Half Life 2 End

wow, just beat it, i had no idea how great the blue gravity gun was going to be

Yeah ... I was disapointed that it ended and I didn't get to use it more. I was yelling at the screen when Breen took the gun.

Bring it back BITCH!!!

sorry but i got to say, im really disappointed at the ending. i mean, there wasnt even a final boss. hl even had the baby thing. this was, quite a wtf for me. i was expecting more from the final level. it was much, much easier and ran through quicker than the other levels did (or felt like), less tense, less combat. the blue gravity gun was too powerful. really there was no challenge. the ending was like, a givaway so you could finish the game.

the bullet time at the explosion, id say: nice, but "thats it?" i was expecting more of a train styled exit as well. hl tradition.

and for the rest of the game, the story was lacking imo. i dont have much of a broad in dept idea of what was going on, just ran through the levels hoping for a great ending.

but whats amazing throughout the game was the graphics, and the use of physics. that really placed the game up "there", but for the story and end, id say it was a let down.

i was dissapointed indeed. sigh.

no i meant that there should be something big at the end that really takes the challenge and makes a big impact on the game and the end.

like, for example, a huge finale boss, then as just about you beat it (after 10 min of intense fire fight), like last bullet. it bullet times and gman comes out. then youd be like. OMFG WHAT IS THIS? something like that

Man, I really dunno how you can say the story isnt brilliant. Its great but there is just so much they never explain, maybe thats what you're talking about. Well, the first time I picked up that blue ray gravity gun, I literally started laughing maniacally, throwing bodies at other bodies, ripping computer consoles from the walls and launching them at the the countless combine, and laughing the whole way. The ending though... I mean, that hardly passed as a boss fight or something, and it all just ended too quickly, again without any idea what was going on or what happened. If Half-Life 3 was going to be released tomorrow I would love the ending, but now it looks like another 6 year wait for HL3 (well, I doubt it will take that long, but you never know...) And wow, Alyx had the best voice acting ever... she was so real. Again I felt like shooting the g-man for that unrewarding ending... but yeah. I also noticed the hints at time travel throughout the game, so I'm kinda guessing at what the HL3 will be like. What I was thinking, although I know its not the case unfortunately, is that you'd travel back in time to stop the incident at Black Mesa or something. But then again, that would be a short game, lol. Maybe even back just to save Alyx there. Oh well. Best game ever, just finished it, wanting more unfortunately... I guess thats the problem with great games: the ending.

You mean you liked end ending of HL1? :s

The Nihilanth was stupid.. lol. And incredibly hard because of those stupid teleporter rays he shot out. Well, I wasn't really dissapointed with the ending, I just thought it should have ended in a huge bang rather than just an earth shattering explosion that was gonna basically destroy the world. Well, theres just too much more left unexplained. We could make an entire list here...

1) What happened after that explosion? Dr Breen said something like: "You have no idea what you're unleashing on the world" or something. Obviously you and Alyx are about to die. Then what happens to the rest of the characters in the citidel? In City 17? Boom and bye bye.

2) All the creatures in the citidel you see but never have a chance to fight. They're breeding some kind of super soldiers I guess from the looks of things, but still they never really say too much except Eli says "Thats genocide" to Dr. Breen.

Well, theres a lot more but I really can't think of them all right now. Those are just two things about the ending that made things so obviously left open for a Half-Life 3.

I think it's a tribute to the story of both Half Life's in that most people want to see the next game just to see what happenes, rather than to play more. Even all those people who say the story sucks still seem to say that they would like to find out more than what happens. How many otyher games are there out there that you want to find out what happens more than just playing another edition?

I like the part when you first get into the citidel and you get to ride the little pod thingies because it reminds you so much of the tram ride in Black Mesa, only its so much cooler because of the eye candy and questions that are brought up about some of the stuff you see along the way. (*ahem* all those weird new aliens)

Posted over at HL2.net:

I don't think people are really getting the ending, or indeed Valve's entire take on storytelling. Valve is all about SHOW DON'T TELL. The storytelling is subtle and deliberately leaves a lot open to interpretation and investigation. You have to piece together what's gone/is going on from scraps of overheard conversation, little clues, and so on. And keeping your eyes open. I think most of the major questions about what's going on in the world, what happened since HL1, are answered in the game. It's not exactly THAT big of a mystery.

As for the larger movers and shakers beyond our world... no, we don't know who or what Breen is talking to, though we do overhear him saying some things about intelligent galaxies and weather formations and a lot of truly crazy stuff. The vortiguants hint at all sorts of crazy stuff having to do with time and unity, putting your role far above some measily resistence leader. But the point is not to solve these mysteries outright, it's to vastly expand the range of the HL universe. At the end of HL2, we now know that the stakes are huge: far greater than we ever imagined. The G-Man is far more powerful than we knew even at the end of HL1. We don't know all the answers to the greater mysteries of the HL universe, but then in a way that's GOOD: it leaves us with some very, very deep mysteries to ponder. And, like HL1, it leaves us unsure if we've done the right things, sided with the right side. Did we just doom humanity? Doesn't Breen have a point?

And frankly, would you all really have been happy with a conventional, boring ending where Gordon kills Breen, then kills some random alien overlord, the G-man claps and then you kill him too, everyone in City 17 cheers and Gordon gets to have teh sex w/ Alyx?

I wouldn't have been impressed with that. Instead, we get a stunning and wildy divergent end to a stunning game. You may be a little put off by what you got, but appreciate it for what it is and what Valve was trying to do. They could have tacked on a goofy teh sex ending. They didn't. They chose to keep us intrigued and guessing and talking. Much better, I think.

A DEAB would do just fine, (Damn Easy Alien Boss). At least something to kill! Oooh! And I tried replaying the game and investigated Alyx more closely. She has a purple thong :D And an ass crack, so I guess that kept me happy

I think the G Man is just awesome. In the first game I loved just shooting at him for fun. He's just everywhere. In Half Life 2 - When you jump down from the train roof and meet the green alien and a guy who opens the train door, theres G Man on TV. Half Life 2 did build up alot of mystery, and Im really hoping Half Life 3 will be the MOST CONCLUSIVE GAME EVAR!!! I dont want a repeat of the movies, Matrix Reloaded and Matrix Revolutions.

Just completed it after about 15 hours. It was absolutely amazing. However, there was something missing, I cant quite put my finger on it, but the Aliens (headcrabs etc) just came from nowhere. In HL1, the reason the Aliens came was because the porthole thingy was open, allowing them to come through. In HL2, they were just there - or maybe i'm missing something?

There was also a distinct lack of Aliens imo. Yes, there were a few in HL2, but I miss killing those massive green tentacle things :p

They were breeded? Or reproduced themselves? I mean thats what parasties do... And yes those Green Tentacle things were cool to kill, but I think they were from the same family of those green alien guys who had electricity coming from their hands. (Those had fire instead right?)

I've never read this anywhere exactly..but the combines are the aliens right? If the answer is yes, then I think absoultemaxpayne.co.uk's answer will be answered, the aliens have simply infested earth, that's why the headcrabs everywhere.

It would make sense if the combines were those guys. Barney can fit in a combine suit, and those aliens were human shaped.

EDIT: Another thing I have noticed. Where abouts is the Ichthyosaur? I didn't come across one. Also theres this:

Also the bullsquids are apparently there somewhere... Where are they!

Its too sad they didnt include that monster! I got all pumped up from watching that part of the trailer. False advertising I say! hahaha!

I guess we'll be seeing that in HL3 if the combine still survived.

Unless the G-Man stopped time permanently, or reversed it - City 17 has been totally destroyed.

Wow, yes where the hell is that thing? So much advertising with that screenshot and even a video but not included in the game at all? That's again not a very nice thing to do, regardless of the fact they decided to remove it, but that says for unorganized advertising. Valve hasn't been very good in ad managing/campaigns.

I can only imagine the devastation that would result from a dark energy explosion 2 miles above the city. The scene in Independance Day with the Alien ship blowing up the empire state building comes to mind, then multiply that by a thousand.

Some interesting lines by Dr.Breen near the end:

"It's me you should be concerned about. I can still deliver earth but not without your help."

"I have laid the foundation for humanity's survival. And not as we have narrowly defined ourselves, but as something greater than we would ever imagined. Something we can now only begin to glimpse."

"A host body? You must be joking, I can't possibly...!"

Can't remember all the context these were delivered in (who he was talking to and stuff).

    • No. Windows 8 had little to no spywhare, is actually faster than 7 but it has the dreaded start screen, nothing that you could not fix with start8. Windows ME crashed often, but was shotlived and replaced by XP, which is a much better windows in itself.
    • Windows 8 was uninspiring but it was fine / worked. It was just overshadowed by how great Windows 7 was. Windows ME seem to be just unstable for most people - I was using Windows 2000, which was far superior. The two best versions are Windows 7 and 2000
    • I don't think ME was that bad. The stability issues were mostly caused by drivers. This was when the switch from vxd to wdm was happening. The other complaint was not being able to shut down into DOS anymore which was silly with XP right around the corner.
    • As much as I hated Windows 8, although I never used it personally on any of my own machines, I think Windows Me was hands down the worst OS from MS. I have Windows 11 on 2 unsupported machines and haven't had any issues and I actually kind of like it. Still hate how slow Windows updates are though.
    • Why do you think they whol industry would be done? Agree a lot has shifted around the launch with devs moving their dates to avoid the timeframe around the launch. But if this fails, it'll be talked about, analysed, Rockstar will likely be ridiculed but people will move on. Others devs might be more cautious about these large games but I don't think one game will change the entire industry
