Dell UltraSharp 2005FPW 20" Widescreen LCD

Recommended Posts

Here you go.

Sorry for HUGE size.

The 2005FPW IS a smaller dimensioned Monitor compared to the 2001.

Measurements are done diagonally.

The main difference which people keep over looking is the aspect ratio's are different.

4:3 2001FPW

16:10 2005FPW

Either way, with the smaller overal dimensions and smaller overal resolution you DO get a bigger desktop with the 2005FPW.

Ok, I'm not a math genius, so can you please explain what you mean? (Keep in mind that I own a 2005FPW, so I'd like to think that you are right)

2001FP

4:3 = 16:12

1600 x 1200 = 1,920,000 pixels

2005FPW

16:10

1680 x 1050 = 1,764,000 pixels

So, how does the 2001FP have more desktop space?

Because the 2005FPW is 16:10 Aspect as opposed to 4:3.

Also, do you know how much 156 Pixels is?

Its tiny!

Resolution is not the same as physical screen size.

The closer you get to a square for a given diagonal, the more area you get; 4:3 is closer than 16:10 so you have more area on the 2001FP.

20" at 4:3=

16x12 (12?+16?=20?)

192in?

20" at 16:10=

16.8x10.5 (16.8?+10.5?≈20?)

176.4in?

You get almost an inch more width but lose an inch and a half on height.

But thats what you get from 4:3 to 16:10!

Thats what Im saying.

You can not really compare a 4:3 to a 16:10!

Different Formats.

A 4:3 20Inch is Square. Therefore its a Huge 20 Inch Box.

a 16:10 is obviously WIDER so it gets wider 3-4 inches for ever 1 inch of height because its a different Aspect ratio.

If you want some to comparable to a 20 Inch 4:3 you need a 23-24 Inch Widescreen, the Dell 2405FPW for Instance.

Buts its a different format/Aspect Ratio. Its not about Actual Screen Dimensions between the two.

I dunno, Maybe im not explaning in a way you can understand

RIGHT!

Now hopefully you can see this with your own eyes.

The 2005FPW DISPLAYS more image then the 2001 in all the above screen shots.

You lose NO Height and Gain a fair amount of Width.

Anyone wanna dispute that?

I still think I am right and I have reasons to back it up. As posted above.

Also, When I say:

1) When I say the 2001 Is bigger I mean the Housing is bigger

2) when I say the 2005 has a bigger viewable area/screen I mean whats displayed. Its more then the 2001.

Hopefully that clears it up.

Field of view in games is totally different than area--you get the same "area" in games at 640x480 as you do at 1600x1200. You specifically mentioned the desktop. Would you dispute that 1600x1200 gives you far more desktop space than 640x480 (in spite of the same "size" in games)? You can get the wide FOV with a 4:3 monitor (I did it for a while but got sick of letterboxing) but would you have a larger area? Of course not, you'd have less area because of the letterboxing.

^ Obviously as it has more pixels and a higher resolution.

I still think the 16:10 Wide Screen Aspect would give you more Space then a 4:3 even though it has lessier reoslution due to it being 16:10.

I dunno dude... Ive had no sleep for ages..

Ill even be wrong or right when I get mine next week.

And I will admit I am wrong If I am, I just believe it will be bigger...

I don't feel like firing up HL2 for this but observe:

Yes, you have a wider FOV in the second, but is it bigger?

(That's a headcrab on the left, a combine soldier on the right):p

Like I said, 640x480 and 1600x1200 are the same size in games but certainly not in desktop area.

Hey, that's pretty good! Do you work for Valve? ;)

Seriously though, hypoxiacon, I am sorry but I think you are wrong. Think about the number of pixels as stated before. I dunno, I've had too much math today to explain my opinion.

I'm their concept artist. :p

Anyway I'm sure you'll smack your forehead when you think about it after some sleep.

The price difference is big, depending on where you are.

Here in Sweden and still from the Dell homepage, the price is ~8400 sek. That's like $ ~1200 - 1700. And now when the Dollar is low, the monitor is even cheaper to purchase international.

But the price is still sky-high for a monitor. AH. I love the monitor and I want it sooooo much.

I have had mine on order since Jan. 3rd.  The damn thing won't get here untill Jan. 17th as long as Dell doesn't delay it again.

585279881[/snapback]

Same here, ordered on the 3rd. Got an e-mail on the 7th saying it'll be delayed until on or before 01-14-2005.

I've already emailed and called their CS department. I've had two priority notifications put on my order and my 2nd day shipping was upgraded to overnight for free. What a bunch of crap that does when it won't even ship for maybe 2 more days. I'm so close to cancelling the order to buy a Mac Mini instead.

Where do you live? I wonder if that has to do w/ the delay. Texas here.

I'm in Arizona. I called up and got upgraded to overnight shipping also. I plan on calling up and getting a supervisor after I get the monitor and I want a 100$ coupon for my next Dell order. I don't know If I will get it but I can try.

I ordered mine on Dec 29th and it probably won't ship until the 19th. That is just a little annoying. There must be some major **** up at the plant which is causing this big backorder. But I did call in and complained and they gave me next day shipping for free(for what it's worth). I was hoping i would be getting it this week, but I will have to wait quite a bit longer for it I guess.

    • Clearly that feature isn't for us. It's for the ad spam marketers so they can more directly target us about going to places we might want to go again...but without understanding context clues. Like for the flight someone took for a friend's funeral. We want to be reminded of that every time we open an app, a browser, or email, right? Right, Siri?
    • Is your Apple Watch supported? Check the watchOS 27 compatibility list by Aditya Tiwari Apple kicked off WWDC 2026 with a ton of announcements, mostly centered around Apple Intelligence improvements, the Siri AI, and Liquid Glass updates. However, there is a lot of other stuff that couldn't catch the limelight. Let's talk about watchOS 27 and which models are supported by the newest operating system. According to the Cupertino giant, watchOS 27 will be supported on the following Apple Watch models when it arrives later this year: Apple Watch Ultra 3 Apple Watch Series 11 Apple Watch SE 3 Apple Watch Series 10 Apple Watch Ultra 2 It's a stark contrast with last year's watchOS 26 update, which had almost a dozen Apple Watch models in its list of supported devices. Apple supported models all the way back to Apple Watch Series 6. That said, if you own one of the five models, you'll need an iPhone 11 (or later) with iOS 27 to install the latest update. Yes, Apple has shown some extra love to the iPhone 11, and it old horse supports the iOS 27 update. watchOS 27 beta 1 is now available for developers and interested power users through the Apple Developer Program. So, if you're among those who like to play with fire, you can download it to your supported Apple Watch. Otherwise, the public beta for watchOS 27 will be available next month. The freshly baked Apple Watch update comes with Siri AI - an advanced, fully conversational version of Siri powered by Apple Intelligence due for later this year. A new dynamic app grid features icons for five Siri-suggested apps. You can use a new tap gesture to open a widget in the Smart Stack, and a new Find My app finally clears the mess of Find Devices, Find Items, and Find People on Apple Watch. Workout Buddy can run without an iPhone nearby and offers new insights based on data, including your progress for pace, distance, and workout duration. Apple improved its motion tracking algorithms to measure the distance of indoor treadmill runs and walks more precisely. Speaking of other changes, the music playback on watchOS 27 starts faster and you can create custom passes for any membership or card that uses a QR code or barcode, then easily access them in the Wallet app or pin in the Smart Stack.

    • Apple unveils Siri AI, a "reimagined" version of SIri by David Uzondu Image via Apple Today, at the opening keynote of Apple's annual World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC), the company announced Siri AI, a "reimagined version" of its voice assistant that runs on Apple Intelligence. Siri AI helps you do things like draft messages, edit photos, and pull old flight details from your email during back-and-forth conversations. You can access Siri AI through several methods, depending on the device. While "Hey Siri" remains active, iPhone users can also press the side button, swipe down from the Dynamic Island, or use a system-wide context menu on Mac to analyze on-screen text. Image via Apple If you ever need to go back and check previous interactions, you can open the dedicated Siri app to view your entire conversation history. This application privately syncs your data using iCloud, leveraging local Foundational Models alongside Apple's secure Private Cloud Compute servers to keep user data inaccessible to outsiders. On the iPhone, Apple built the assistant into the Camera app, bringing Visual Intelligence to help you split bills or count calories. This feature also expands to the iPad and Mac, letting users use screenshots or shortcuts to analyze images, while Apple Vision Pro users can ask questions about objects in their physical room. Other things to know about Siri AI include systemwide dictation that automatically handles punctuation and formatting, customizable voice speeds, and a spatial 3D interface built for Apple Vision Pro. Apple also added Smart Stack suggestions on the Apple Watch to help you continue recent conversations directly from your wrist. The road to Siri AI was quite bumpy for Apple, which initially promised these capabilities at WWDC 2024 when the Cupertino tech giant debuted Apple Intelligence. Apple later turned to Google, signing a $1 billion annual deal to use Gemini models instead of relying solely on its own in-house systems. However, this deal came only after consumers sued Apple because features Apple promised "did not exist at the time, do not exist now, and will not exist for two or more years." Siri AI is available for developer testing on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, and visionOS 27.
    • Real shame the 16 GB versions are crazy more expensive than this.
