Dell UltraSharp 2005FPW 20" Widescreen LCD

Recommended Posts

I just got my 2005FPW in. Flawless. No dead pixels.

I searched and searched for dead pixels. When I thought i found one, I rubbed the screen and it was a piece of dust. :p Heh. I have STUDIED this screen. No dead pixels.

No bleeding issues either it is just a few shades of a lighter black in the corners. The only way you can notice this is by having a completely black screen and squinting your eyes. It is BEAUTIFUL to look at. It is extremely bright, its amazing.

For all you techies out there... here are the dimentions of the SCREEN. No one has posted this as I have seen.

Width: 17.25 inches (viewable area)

Height: 10.75 inches (viewable area)

Its huge.

I set everything to aspect mode, so things wouldn't stretch and lose their quality, unless done so by software.

HL2 widescreen is certainly an amazing experience. It is AMAZING. I noticed no stretching in HL2, however there was some stretching in CS:S near the edges. Just a bit. In UT2k4 there is no stretching.

What can I say? It owns.

I am somewhat happy with mine, but trying to decide if I should exchange it or not. I do have minor backlight bleeding in the lower left corner and about 4 stuck pixels, but only 2 of them are brighter then the others, one is red and the other green. The thing is the only time I see them or the bleeding is when the screen is completey dark and that is usually never. When I am using the screen I really do not see them at all so that makes my decison tougher. I do have a January A01 Revision.

My thought is if it does not effect me I may not bother trying to play the exchange game. I did buy mine with a new system and it is all fully warrantied for three years so it might be less of a hassle for me to do an exchange as long as they send me new one before this one goes back because I only have the one monitor.

My question for the people that are returning them etc

Do you actaully see the defects in normal use or just when the screen is completely black?

Let me know your opinions ??

Thanks,

Tom

hey tom,

sorry to hear about the dead pixels and your problems.. i would say if it annoys you sometimes, you should get another. i got a perfect one on my first try. even if the second one is worse, just be consistent and keep sending it back.. i wouldnt just deal with it because i dont want to take a risk..

i have a question as well. do you see the numbers on the bottom of the screen? (1,2,3,4) my 1 is lighten up green. what do the diffferent things mean when they light up?

Those numbers are for what input you are using. 1 for VGA, 2 for DVI, and 3 & 4 are for Composite and S-Video (Not sure which one is which).

Hey thanks for the info there and Congrats on getting a perfect one!! That is the reason I am thinking of doing the exchange since it seems there may be some perfect ones coming out of the new revisions. Well one thing is if they send me one before this one has to go back then I can keep the better one. I do not even care if they have to charge me and just credit me when they get one of them back.

It is not too annoying except for the part of knowing that the issues are there and occasionally seeing those pixels when the screen is black. What is funny is I have a 3 year old Dell 17 inch flat panel that has no issues at all. Pixels are fine and not much backlight at all. That is why I am curious to hear from people who also have issues with this model, do they even see the dead pixels or back light in every day use. I really only see it on a perfectly black screen. When using the system normally you cannot really spot it at all and plus I use the Monitor for regular computing (Video Editing etc). Not really as a TV, so the screen is not really black that much when in use.

Let me know--Still curious to hear from people with the problems?

Thanks, Tom

i know what you mean. i did that one time with my palm tungsten t3. i got a defective one.. they sent me another and charged me for two, but i sent one back and i got credited.. they didnt cover the shipping costs though :(

Well they better lol

I just received this monitor like 2 weeks ago, so it is basically brand new and fully warrantied, because I received it with a new system. It would not be any different then paying to ship the new one and paying for return of the old one since they would be doing that already and it would be considered defective. Let's hope. Now I just want to get home from work, so I can look at it again and make my final decision.

Ive started saving already :p I want one !

Altho im curious, playing half life 2 at 1680x1050 and also other games on all high settings....you'd need a pretty fast computer and graphics card to handle that ? ! No stuttering for any of you with this screen ? is gameplay very smooth ?

you dont have to play at 1680x1050, i mean i have probably the worst video card possible but it plays fine.. i play the games on lower settings but on my desktop it is set to 1680x1050... my card is a geforce2 mx/mx400 and it is a vga connection so again it wont matter too much

My old computer is hooked up to this as well through the VGA connection and I have a GeForce 3 Ti in that one, but it wont let me choose 1680 x 1050. So I had to leave it set to aspect and run at 1280x1024. You think I need to upgrade the Video card drivers then so I can get a choice to run it at the native resolution? The monitor drivers are installed, but it does not give me a 1680 choice.

My new system is hooked up through the DVI and looks fine at the 1680x1050. I had that choice right away.

Kinda weird?

what monitor drivers? i got the cd but dint see them. i didnt even install any

The Monitor Drivers are included on the CD-Rom that came with the monitor. You just go into Device Manager and choose the Monitor and Update the Driver from there and it will grab it from the CD. Or you can get updated drivers from Dell's Support site (support.dell.com), which are actually newer. I saw they were dated 2/2/2005.

what do they do, anything different?

Well using the correct drivers versus the standard Microsoft ones just can help with better color representation etc because it uses the right color profile, and sets up the video card to work right with your monitor.

I play my games in 1200x768 (16:10) so I still get the widescreen but don't have to run at such a high resolution. All games that support custom resolutions will support the widescreen. Those that don't can usually be modified to support the 16:10 aspect ratio.

i just got mine and it's awesome but I have one dead pixel! i guess i have to send it back! I don't want to though it's so nice! :( its a dead pixel only when the screen is black but its on the center left so it's kinda annoying. should I try to rub it out? any tips?

Are you crazy? Most LCD monitors average 2-4 dead pixels. 1 dead pixel should not be a reason to return the monitor. That is simply...crazy lol.

    • Right, Google... because that's who this is going to. Google, the company who's entire business model is geared around ad revenue and your personal data.
    • That is the natural course for regulations. First to protect the consumer. Then to protect the business/industry from upstart competition. There are countless examples across history.
    • I have never been a huge fan of libre, it feels really good but exactly when you need an advance feature for data wrangling it falls short every time or has bugs. I am all for euro office if they can deliver a good and usable alternative to MS office with backing of govt function.
    • Go on, I'll bite. How does windows (nice comment on an 'article' which doesn't actually involve it ) lock users out of their data then? Been using it since 3.1 back in 92 and not once have I been locked out of my data? Perhaps you mean Bitlocker? In which case the average user (who doesn't mess about) will have been forced to use a MSA, and in which case the recovery key would have been saved to said account..... If the user did happen to bodge around and not use an MSA then Bitlocker wouldn't have become live (as it cannot without a safe place to store the key) I want to point out Bitlocker and MSA are not connected and you can of course force it on without a safe place to store the key, but you do that with your eyes open. So your standard consumer who knows no better sets up an MSA, gets bitlocker and a recovery key stored off box, with a route to reset their password. All of this notwithstanding the fact, if your data is important, you back it up, no ifs, no buts, no-ones responsibility other than your own. Important data lives in at least two locations, one of which is offline and recovery is tested, otherwise that data wasn't really that important. Disks, fail, laptops get lost, phones end up down the toilet, tablets get stolen, if your only copy of data is on a single device you're doing it wrong.
    • Clearly that feature isn't for us. It's for the ad spam marketers so they can more directly target us about going to places we might want to go again...but without understanding context clues. Like for the flight someone took for a friend's funeral. We want to be reminded of that every time we open an app, a browser, or email, right? Right, Siri?
