Ubuntu - Uninstalling Gnome - Installing

Recommended Posts

aside from my main computer running gentoo i have another computer, pretty basic, 2mb onboard video + onboard everything else, Athlon 900, 512MB SDRAM

i just installed ubuntu, basically because i cbf spending 3 days installing gentoo :p and i wanted a package management systems, i have heard bad things about debians install, and good things about ubuntu and seeing ubuntu is based on debian, i figured why not give it a shot:

first problem (i knew this would arise):

i DONT want gnome, i know its the basis of ubuntu and has all these upgraded features and stuff, but i dont want it, mainly because it takes up too much space and my comp cant handle it anyway :p

i want to uninstall it, but i have nfi how to use apt-get

apt-get remove gnome

package not found :s

i konw its really dumb of me but i must say emerge is so much better

so then i tried to get a listing of all the packages installed, but, alas, couldnt figure that out either

second problem:

i want to install either fluxbox or XFCE2 or some other light weight gui, simply to handle the few GUI apps i will be running

again i couldnt figure out how to use apt-get

apt-get install fluxbox

package not found :s

hmm ok :s all i can say is that emerge/portage > apt-get

i know i seem a bit irritated, probubly because i am, its 12:00 at night heh and im going to bed

thanks in advance for any help or advice you can give me

please only post useful comments, i have tried searching google for how to remove gnome and install fluxbox, but seeing ubuntu is relatively young distro there isnt much in the way of help

doesnt ubuntu have synaptic? If so use that its a gui for apt-get

Yes you can use synaptic to uninstall gnome. You'll have to edit your apt sources list to download fluxbox etc. there are 2 lines that have been commented out, change them so they arent commented out.

You can edit it the sources in synaptic too, if you're lazy (or n00b-sh) like me :p

yeh yeh, but your all missing the entire point of this thread, i know ubuntu has synaptic, but the _REASON_ behind me wanting to get rid of gnome and employ a less graphically intense WM was that my onboard 2mb vid card is unable to handle the gnome GUI (which at the present time is the only GUI i have) hence i am unable to use synaptic and are only able to do things from the command line

err i am having problems with my irc client and the profile... i give you the command to do

sudo rm -r /etc/apt/sources.list

sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list

add the following to it:

deb http://mirror.isp.net.au/ftp/pub/ubuntu/ warty main universe multiverse restricted

then push the following keys ctrl+o enter ctrl+x

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install fluxbox

all done

    • Microsoft disables a key graphics feature in Edge by Paul Hill Microsoft has released its new security baseline for its Edge browser version 139, it includes the addition of one setting and the removal of one other. For those that are unaware, these security baselines allow admins to set an organization’s Edge browser settings to the default that Microsoft recommends at any one time. You can download the new package from the Security Compliance Toolkit. With this update, the company is enforcing the default to disable the EnableUnsafeSwiftShader policy. This will help to mitigate potential risks as malicious web content could exploit vulnerabilities in the renderer. SwiftShader is a software-based renderer that serves as a fallback for WebGL in environments without GPU acceleration, such as virtual machines. With Microsoft’s disabling of it, it seems as though this compatibility tool is now seen as a liability. The disabled SwiftShader was the most relevant in virtual machines which are widely used in enterprises, so this change poses the risk of causing a bit of disruption. While the move is a good one for security, those who it affects may want to deviate away from Microsoft’s security baselines. The security baseline announcement also mentions a new Edge for Business security connectors feature which is designed to integrate the browser with security software for DLP and authentication. Microsoft said that these connectors can close critical gaps in enterprise security. You can learn more on the feature’s landing page. Microsoft doesn’t seem to have made the change to SwiftShader due to existing vulnerabilities, instead the move seems to be a proactive security improvement. If you rely on it with your virtual machines, feel free to deviate away from Microsoft’s security baseline, but understand you’re no longer following the company’s security advice.
