System logger is not playing ball...

Recommended Posts

Hi I am using sysklogd klogd to log system kernel events - however for some weird reason they are not logging any errors. They only seem to log sucessful kernel events. The problem is that when i boot I am seeing one or two error messages - and some messages about missing modules. I want to be able to see what these are, but they are spinning by too fast to see. dmesag doesn't tell me what these messages are - nor does anything in /var/log. Like I said it appears that only sucessful sytem events are being logged.

Really what I would like is for all kernel and sytem events to be logged, from boot until X starts.

Howver I have no idea how to do this.

I would like to change to metalog - but I have a few programs that claim to depend on sysklogd that I need so that isn't an option. I am not clear anyway if this would resolve my issues - as really sysklogd should be logging failures as well as successful events.

It doesn't make much sense.

How do I get sysklogd to log events properly? And is there a way to see a full list of system events from X until start up using some other utility?

Any input anyone can offer would be very much appreciated.

Best regards,

GJ

Like I said dmesg is simply displaying the output from whatever logger is in use. since sysklogd and klogd aren't playing ball and seem to be refusing to log any error messages, dmesg is only repeating the output of the messages they do log.

I need a log of my error messages in order to try to fix them.
