Whats the diff between Molex power and SATA power?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys what is the difference between using the standard Molex power and SATA power for a SATA HDD?

Thanks :)

I don't think there is a difference as far as the power is concerned. The rails should still be pushing the same power. I think it's more of ease of connectivity than anything else. Since the SATA power connects, I loath the molex connectors.

yeh well I knew they look different. Was just wanting to know whether there was any performence difference. Thanks guys

Theres is no performance difference because the power is coming from the same PSU for both connectors...

yes, they output special SATA power. this makes devices run twice as fast.

seriously though no difference is there just the interface but as far as performance, increase or decrease. Nothing

Thanks guys :) And yeh my drive is a WD and has got SATA power and Molex. Thanks though the reason I wanted to know this is because I cant use the SATA power because the graphics card is too long and is in the way of the SATA power interface, however the Molex is on the other end so it will work great. So Thanks dudes :D

Both connectors are there because the drive is using a bridge chip so it's essentially a IDE drive so the legacy molex will still be there. The difference between the two is that the legacy molex provides +5v and +12v the newer sata molex provides +3.3,+5v and +12v. If the drive is a native sata drive such as Seagate, newer Maxtors and others then it won't have the legacy molex.

    • It won't perform hugely better than the 3080 unless you're VRAM limited in games. Have you tried putting new thermal pads on them 3080 and giving it a good clean to see if you can regain your temps and overclock?
    • Windows 95 offered the ability to add and edit the right click menus, on a per file type basis. This feature seems to be missing in the new file explorer. Are they bringing it back as a "new" feature?
    • It's nearly time to replace my aging Founders Edition 3080, it doesn't OC as nicely as it used to and it's running around 10c warmer than it did when I first bought it.  I don't have budget for much more than what I spent on the 3080 and locally, that means the best GPU I can manage is a 9070XT. On this basis I have a few questions: 1. At present I don't use ray tracing, if this was to change, would this GPU be an issue? 2. How does it compare on a performance basis? 3. Are the drivers worse or better than those for nVidia? 4. Linux support, is it there? 5. Anything else I should be aware of if I were to make this change? 6. Is it a good idea or shall I try and keep the 3080 a little longer.
    • What OS is that? It looks a bit like Mac OS but the command line suggests it isn't, either way I like it!
