murfster
Hey guys what is the difference between using the standard Molex power and SATA power for a SATA HDD?Thanks :) 584980999 I don't think there is a difference as far as the power is concerned. The rails should still be pushing the same power. I think it's more of ease of connectivity than anything else. Since the SATA power connects, I loath the molex connectors. Thanks guys 584981073 yes, they output special SATA power. this makes devices run twice as fast. Thanks guys 584981073 Theres is no performance difference because the power is coming from the same PSU for both connectors... shihchiun
i doubt one hard drive would have both. it's either an ide/pata drive or an sata drive, never both. se7en.hu
Thanks guys :) And yeh my drive is a WD and has got SATA power and Molex. Thanks though the reason I wanted to know this is because I cant use the SATA power because the graphics card is too long and is in the way of the SATA power interface, however the Molex is on the other end so it will work great. So Thanks dudes :D Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/248488-whats-the-diff-between-molex-power-and-sata-power/#findComment-584984685 Share on other sites
lostspyder
All the sata conector is is a molex conector in a difrent interface. The pin locations are a little diffrent too. Id actualy perfer to use molex (they seem to be more secure) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/248488-whats-the-diff-between-molex-power-and-sata-power/#findComment-584984751 Share on other sites
tkyoshi
Well part of the reason for the SATA connector not being as snuggly is because it was also ment to be hot-swappable so it's easy to remove and plug in. A10
Both connectors are there because the drive is using a bridge chip so it's essentially a IDE drive so the legacy molex will still be there. The difference between the two is that the legacy molex provides +5v and +12v the newer sata molex provides +3.3,+5v and +12v. If the drive is a native sata drive such as Seagate, newer Maxtors and others then it won't have the legacy molex. Ridgeburner
most SATA hard drives have both, the molex connection is just usually covered up though, but can have the cover popped off to use it.
