VPU Error//Need Help

Recommended Posts

"VPU Recover has reset your graphics accelerator as it was no longer responding to graphics driver commands"

Every now and then during normal use of my PC it freezes for about 10 seconds, the screen goes black for about 10 seconds as well and then it goes back to normal but i get that error msg. I've reinstalled all the drivers, even downloaded and installed the latest drivers.

I've got a 128mb ATi Radeon 9600 Series AGP (Driver Version 6.14.0010.6476)

and I'm running XP Home on a AMD Athlon XP 3000+

Can somebody please help me, it's frustrating the hell out of me

PS. It doesn't do this during Doom 3 or Starwars: Battlefront... only when i'm using windows... sometimes it does it when i'm not doing anything either.

I used to have VPU recover resets in almost everygame i played after about 5 minutes. They've completely dissappeareed now after trying lots of different things so i don't know what fixed it. I'll give you a list of things i tried...

I disabled two options in the bios AGP master1ws summat or other. I also changed the via agp driver to the microsoft one as instructed by via or their website. I made sure the gfx card was on its own connector from the PSU.

Anyway i did a mixtuire of those things and now all my problems are solved.

Disable it :)

I've always disabled VPU Recoverer and Fast Writes....no probs here, and ive soft modded my 9800Pro to a XT (speeds just over XT speeds)...

Taken from www.tweakguides.com :-

Fast Write: This setting is detailed under the BIOS section above, and is essentially the same as the BIOS setting of the same name. Your current Fast Write setting (On or Off) is shown here. As mentioned earlier, Fast Write is a major source of instability on most systems and provides little to no performance benefit, so it is strongly recommended that you select Off here to disable Fast Writes.

Enable VPU Recover: VPU Recover attempts to stop any sort of graphics-related crashes or freezes from completely locking up or resetting your machine. While this is a valiant idea, in practice VPU Recover has been known to increase the probability of problems and crashes itself when enabled, and more importantly using VPU Recover regularly is a sign that something is wrong with your system and you need to find the source of the problem. I recommend that you untick (disable) VPU Recover to increase system stability, and then seek out and remedy the source of any problems by using the tips in the rest of this guide, such as those in the Troubleshooting section below.

    • According to the developer(s):
    • Most of the sellers are selling under a business name, and you can't jail a business. The best option would be to blanket ban brick chargers and regulate fixed PD faceplates for wall as a spur from existing sockets. That way they'd be checked with during during an EICR.
    • Totally ridiculous! They wonder why people can't stand their company...
