blackice912 Veteran Posted November 25, 2004 Veteran Share Posted November 25, 2004 (edited) NFiles Development Thread NFiles Status: In Beta | 91% complete Status Details: NeoIMG mostly coded into NFiles. Need to add a few more features and then will be complete with NeoIMG. Have designed an upload mirror script for users to use when server is not allowing NFiles to upload. Notice: NFiles is now in open beta. Below is the original description of NFiles and NeoIMG (Both merging into being one "NFiles" script). _________________________________________________ Hey everyone, I've got a few projects on the burner right now. One has most of the code completed, the other is on the drawing table. Hear me out, and let me know what you think. NFiles Status: Status Above ^^ Description: NFiles would be a file hosting service for Neowin. Neowin members would be able to quickly upload files and serve them to visitors of Neowin instantly. If this is a one time upload, the member would be able to upload the file through FTP or a web form (depending on the file size), then proceed to link other members to the file right away. If the member decides that they need to delete their uploaded file(s) for whatever reason, it's just a few clicks. If it's a project that will have considerable updates and could use some dedicated space for hosting a project page, then a member would be able to apply for hosting. Hosting would not be an instant thing, as I would have to review and setup the space. While it's true that I haven't written a piece of code for this (lies, I started it now), it wouldn't take me long to do. Most of what I'd need to write is thought out in my head. I'd just need to open up notepad. I'm also up in the air of deciding on if all files could only be hotlinked from Neowin. This would kill a lot of abuse and keep it member-centered. --- NeoIMG Status: Status Above ^^ Description: NeoIMG is a fairly simple idea, but with a twist. I know a few members here offer free image hosting to everyone, but this would take that to the next level - with randomized signatures. When a member visits the NeoIMG site, they would be able to create "Dynamic Folders". Dynamic folders contain the images you want to be randomly chosen when used on a forum signature. Example: As the example shows, you can have a different dynamic folder for whatever forum/site/whatever you want. As seen in "C", you don't have to make it dynamic if you don't want to - just put one image in the folder if you want! --- Comments? Complaints? Ideas? blackice912 Veteran Posted November 28, 2004 Author Veteran Share Posted November 28, 2004 Could I possibly ask everyone from each user group (Registered, Supervisor, Newsposter, Super Moderator, etc...) to visit this page, login, and tell me what group name it shows to you? I need it word for word, as the Neowin login system cuts off letters in the group names (Example: "@ Subscriber" is "@ Subscrib"). Thanks! blackice912 Veteran Posted November 28, 2004 Author Veteran Share Posted November 28, 2004 Id love to betatest this with my neowin signature 585000383[/snapback] I'm planning on skipping any betas for NeoIMG. :) Most of the code is written (previous project), so I just need to tie the signup system directly into the login system. Should be quick. Though you can help right now by going to (nevermind, read a few posts below) and telling me the result that comes up after logging in! :D Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/249032-nfiles-development-thread/#findComment-585000455 Share on other sites

blackice912 Veteran Posted November 29, 2004 Author Veteran Share Posted November 29, 2004 Thanks :) That helps a lot, trust me. Now I just need to drag the Neowin staff in here and get them to tell me their usergroup results. blackice912 Veteran Posted November 29, 2004 Author Veteran Share Posted November 29, 2004 I've been working on NFiles the past few days, and have pretty much completed the quick upload portion of it. I just need to have the script move the file to a folder designated for the member that is uploading, then throw them a download link for them to share. After that, I'll start the FTP portion. blackice912 Veteran Posted November 29, 2004 Author Veteran Share Posted November 29, 2004 Nevermind about the group checking thing guys. :) I figured it out. For some reason, all groups get cut off at 10 characters. blackice912 Veteran Posted November 29, 2004 Author Veteran Share Posted November 29, 2004 Final update for tonight: (Nfiles) I managed to get the quick upload system completed. My next step will probably be the FTP upload, though that should go so much easier as I'll probably steal a lot of the code I've already made. After that, I plan on coding the file manager (which will allow you to delete any files you uploaded/get statistics on files/get the link for them again) followed by the part that actually lets you download. Next update will probably be on Tuesday, as I'm going to a playtest at Microsoft tomorrow night (and I usually code at night). blackice912 Veteran Posted December 2, 2004 Author Veteran Share Posted December 2, 2004 Sorry I haven't given an update, but I've had some weird sleeping schedules the past few nights. I've gotten NFiles to the point where it only allows certain file types to be uploaded. Right now the current ALLOW list is: .jp(e)g, .gif, .png, .zip, .exe, .rar, and .nfo files. Also I made sure you had to be logged in to be able to upload -- bad things happen if you aren't. :) Anyways, more to be done tonight after work. Probably begin the FTP code tonight. blackice912 Veteran Posted December 8, 2004 Author Veteran Share Posted December 8, 2004 Latest NFiles update: I have the FTP Upload portion working. I have uploaded a file through anonymous FTP, had the script check the file, moved it to the user folder, and added the file information to the user database. My next mission will be to make the file manager. After that's done, I'll create the portion of the script that allows file downloads. :) Once those are done and over with, I'll code in the final page layout. blackice912 Veteran Posted December 16, 2004 Author Veteran Share Posted December 16, 2004 Another NFiles update: I pretty much have the File Manager workings completed. It's actually turning out to be a lot easier, though I Just need to add the file statistics to the code. I'm giving NFiles an ETA of the first week in January. Homer
I'll probably have a server running again in the new year when I get a job and a suficient income, so if you need any mirrors for it, just gimmie a shout man! Homer
I just had a good idea; If the demand for this service gets high and resource usage gets high enough, I will set up a server for it (and my other sites while I'm at it). I can get a cheap CPanel Linux or normal Windows 2003 Web box for around $59.99/mo, I'll be able to pay for most of it but if people could fund it to make this a true Neowin project, then I'll do all of the administration for it etc. I'd only take as much as I'd need in, say $30 from me, $10 from somebody else and $19.99 from another person. What do you think? But that would only happen if it got big enough to require it's own server...
