jkinzer
I am going to upgrade the XP Box in my sig with either of the following two sets of motherboard/CPU. Which one would be the best buy (prices from Newegg)? Option 1 ASUS P5P800 865PE ($94.50) P4 540 3.2 GHz, LGA 775, 800MHz FSB, 1MB L2 Cache, HT ($219.00) Total: $313.50 Option 2 ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe ($179.50) P4 3.2E GHz, Socket 478, 800MHz FSB, 1MB L2 Cache, HT ($219.50) Total: $399 Edit: I need to be able to keep my current memory. Suggest alternates like AMD-64 if you want, but I have never bought AMD so I know nothing about chipsets or good motherboards. I would like to stay in the $300-$400 price range. Obviously, Option 1 is less expensive, but is the P4C800-E worth it? Or should I get Option 1 because it is more forward compatible for near-future upgrades? I forsee myself getting a PCI-Express video card within a year, so that is why I was thinking about going with LGA 775 since right now it seems like only motherboards supporting that socket include PCI-E. What do you think? Thanks! Edited December 4, 2004 by jkinzer Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/252912-to-buy-lga-775-or-socket-478/ Share on other sites

jkinzer
Socket 478 585041559 Ok, but why? Because the P4C800-E is a superior motherboard? Hypoxiaicon
The P4C800-E Is an EXCELLENT motherboard (Look I have the ABIT, Im not Biased) My opinion, Socket 478 or AMD 64 Setup :) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/252912-to-buy-lga-775-or-socket-478/#findComment-585041568 Share on other sites
2s2k
because you have to buy ddr2 memory and a pci-x gfx card also if you go for s775 :p Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/252912-to-buy-lga-775-or-socket-478/#findComment-585041569 Share on other sites

Thus, it is sort of a stepping-stone from my DDR400/AGP system to a DDR2/PCI-E system. coolmonk
Considering your CPU choice, I'd strongly recommend the P4C800-E Deluxe. It is a quality board that has been the favorite among almost every serious PC enthusiast. By the way, I'd also recommend a Northwood CPU versus a Prescott unless you're getting a 3.6E or higher. My 3.0C outperforms the 3.2E in most benchmark categories when both are running at stock speeds. Advantages of a Northwood are cooler temps, better overclocking w/ stock hsf, and better for gaming. anthony
s775 no pci-x and ddr2? 585041580 Yes, early Socket 775 was DDR 400, and AGP, then DDR 400 and PCIe, then the DDR2 I know and hate. Seriously though, I'd recommend the Socket 775, it's newer technology and Socket 478 Prescotts are just as hot as Socket 775, and teh new cooler is teh "****" Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/252912-to-buy-lga-775-or-socket-478/#findComment-585041603 Share on other sites
Alex Shenoy
If you must go Intel, I'd get the LGA. Its going to have future compatibility while the 478(or whatever) is going to fade out. So, what would you suggest? ShaneSparky_YYZ
I would go with a 478 processor. However why do u need the ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe board? If you aren't gonna use Raid get a different board like the p4p800se (It uses DDR400 and AGP8X). Also the 865pe chipset is exactly like the 875 pretty much. ;) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/252912-to-buy-lga-775-or-socket-478/#findComment-585041688 Share on other sites
Steven
I think you guys are all wrong here. Maybe some of you don't know this but.... The P5P800 is the i865PE Chipset with an LGA775 Socket. :D It uses DDR400, AGP8X and has No PCI-e. It's a hot board if you don't need PCI-Express and want the latest Intel Processor. I think it makes sense to get the P5P800 if you want to get a E0 Stepping Prescott (EJ). I don't use RAID, but have heard so many good things about the PCP800-E that I wanted to consider it. Also, the P5P800 makes sense because if I do upgrade to a PCI-E video card then I don't want to have to ditch an expensive MB for the upgrade. ShaneSparky_YYZ
For those who are saying go with ddr2, its not worth it yet. Much more expensive than ddr1 and not much difference since speeds are not that far ahead of ddr1. Wait til ddr2 800mhz comes out atleast :) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/252912-to-buy-lga-775-or-socket-478/#findComment-585041724 Share on other sites

I would recommend this setup for anyone who wants an LGA775 CPU and still has a fast AGP8X Video card they still want to use. As for The Processor hang on a while, and wait for the EJ's to appear. They're really a lot better than the E's. The P5P800 has a 24 pin power connector. So I recommend you get a new PSU. The Antec Neopower.
