To buy: LGA 775 or Socket 478?

Recommended Posts

The P5P800 has a 24 pin power connector. So I recommend you get a new PSU.

The Antec Neopower.

Ah, I knew I was forgetting something. That obviously makes the 775 upgrade a bit more pricey, but it sounds like it will be worthwhile, because the CPU and PSU could be kept when I buy a PCI-E MB/vidcard.

Heres my MOBO

P4R800-V DELUXE bought it about 6 months ago when it was at $110, but you can get it for about 80 now

Just bought a P42.8E because I to was on a strict budget. Ive had the cpu for all but a week. Upgraded from a 2.7 cele. N northwoods availible in my area, so last choice w/out goin broke was a Prescott. Acually rusns pretty cool, but then again its only a 2.8, but even at 3.10 its about the same temps(42c-49c) and in gaming tis at about 53c. Just offering my 2 cents...

My system:

CPU: Intel P4 2.8GHz Prescott (LGA775 w/ stock cooler)

RAM: 512MB (2x256) Corsair TwinX PC3200C2PT DDR (6-3-3-2)

MOBO: DFI LanParty UT 915P-T12 w/ latest official bios (Intel 915P chipset)

HD: 160GB Samsung SP1614C SATA Hard Drive

VID: EVGA GeForce 6600 256MB PCIe

PSU: Fortron FSP530-60GNA 530 watt

AUDIO: Onboard - Azalia (sounds great!)

OS: Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition

Those are the specs on the new LGA775 system I built. I LOVE it so far. The motherboard requires a 24-pin atx connector AND the 4-pin aux connector so be advised! I am actually using a 20-pin atx connector and 4-pin aux power supply. I have left the 4 remaining atx pins on the motherboard empty. Although this is risky it has been running fine so far. Just to be on the safe side I plan on getting a new power supply soon. I got my eye on this one: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc....-104-935&depa=0 . I love fortron's power supplies

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but I just wanted to give an update on my decision. I am selling my old parts and plan to get:

ASUS P5P800

Intel P4 3.4GHz (LGA 775)

1GB Corsair XMS Extreme Series (PC3200)

Antec NeoPower 480W

Any suggestions?

For anyone new, this will be an upgrade of the XP Box in my sig.

Looks good. You be patient if you can and wait for an E0 3.4GHz. (Y)

    • I need to understand the rationale of not shipping all of these K2 improvements in a single update/release. It's giving "we will fix Windows 11 but no commitments". It seems to me that they just announce these improvements just to appease the community.
