Bling3k12
You know, if you have questions or whatever, make a better, more thought out post. I can understand alot of crap people put out, but don't understand what the hell your post is about. Southern Patriot
Not only that, but technically neither of them is a virus, since they cannot spread on their own. To my knowledge, there are no "true" viruses for OS X in existence. SPeedY_B
Virii don't have to spread on their own, that would make it a worm? Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/254011-mac-os-x-viruses/#findComment-585070834 Share on other sites
Vice
These are more like Trojans with evil intent. both require the user to activate, and one of them requires you to enter your administrator password + user name to delete your Home folder. None of these can spread over a network / infect other files. abrooks
There is a very short list of virii for the Mac I'm not sure its even published but they aren't very dangerous and most of them are Macro Virii for Microsoft Word, see what happens when we let them infect our computers. oik
there are no true virii for os x. yet. some will tell you this is because so few people use os x that it's not worth it, but if you were the first person to make a virus for os x, that'd be one hell of a reputation... Vice
Yes, Opener is trojan app, but MP3Virus.Gen is a "virus"... really... 585072571[/snapback] To be a virus it has to infect other files, it cannot do this. Therefore it is not a virus, there naming of it is ultimately flawed. MP3.Virus.Gen is a .app file which has a masked extension as a .mp3 it also has an icon for a music file, when you open it, it goes to work and says "enter user name and password" holy cow a MP3 with the latest anti piracy protection? No its not the RIAA, this time its intego, the creators of this "Concept" "Virus". If you don't know Intego are a antivirus / firewall company for macintosh. they created this "virus" to get into the news and make people buy there product (they succeeded in getting some macintosh noobs to buy there software) Anyway no Virus for Mac Os X exists. There is 1 Trojan on the loose though. OH NOES! Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/254011-mac-os-x-viruses/#findComment-585073126 Share on other sites
Darnassus
No, no... you're not right. Mp3Virus.Gen is a virus! That app can infect some mp3 files. "Opener" is a bsd script and "Opener" says "enter root password". Southern Patriot
Listen, Darnassus, most of the people who have been replying to you obviously have much more knowledge about this than you do, so stop arguing the point with them. HERE is Symantec's page about MP3Virus.Gen, which clearly states that it is NOT a virus, but a trojan horse. It CANNOT infect other files. edit: here is the quote from that page, in case you can't be bothered to follow the link. The proof-of-concept program does not contain any malicious payload, such as viral code, ability to email itself, or perform destructive functions like deleting files. This program only contains code to display a message and play a .mp3 file of a man laughing. Darnassus
Sorry, if "It CANNOT infect other files." is true, then MP3Virus.Gen is a trojan app... And maybe that virus wasn't named "Mp3Virus.Gen", but I know that virus... Edited December 10, 2004 by Darnassus Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/254011-mac-os-x-viruses/#findComment-585077277 Share on other sites

amoeba
virus - requires a person to send it elsewhere worm - sends itself elsewhere From what I can gather, both of those sound like Trojans.
